The first of the gas-driven lorries fitted up by the Australian Gaslight Company may be seen in commission in the streets of Sydney. These lorries have been in use for some time in England, and are designed to supply the want caused by the shortage of benzine. By substituting gas direct instead of benzine as a motive power, it is claimed that a considerable saving in running is effected. In England the gas-driven' vehicles have been brought to a high state of perfection, and a large number of them are now in use. Nevertheless, the application of the new idea is still in the early stages, and much remains to be done before perfection is reached. It is said the lorry can be run at less than one-third the cost of petrol at its present price. Casual observers seeing the contrivance in Sydney streets were apt to think they had run across a model airship, for that is what the gas container attached to the lorry most resembles. With regard to the introduction of gas-driven vehicles in New South Wales, the Government is anxious to have the new motive powers adopted as widely as possible, owing to the scarcity of petrol.
