Received July 11, 8.55 p.m. The Chamber of Commerce resolved that the increasing prevalence of gambling methods in connection with raising funds for patriotic purposes was opposed to the best interests of the community, and urging the more rigid enforcement of the gambling laws. HANDS AROUND THE PACIFIC. SYDNEY, July 11. Received July 11, 8.55 p.m. A meeting at the Town Hall inaugurated a “Hands Around the Pacific” dub, linking up with the branches at San Francisco, Seattle, and Honolulu, with a view to cementing Allied interests in the Pacific internationally, socially, and commercially. A COLD SNAP. SYDNEY, July 11. Received July 11, 8.55 p.m. The coldest snap in ten years is being experienced, accompanied by coastal gales, which are delaying shipping. SOLDIERS’ WIDOWS. MELBOURNE, July 11. It is announced that benefits for widows under the repatriation scheme will be available to a soldier’s wife who becomes a widow within seven years after a soldier’s discharge. PREFERENTIAL VOTING URGED. SYDNEY, July 11. The Farmers’ Conference passed a motion urging the introduction of preferential voting, and expressing alarm at the increasing cost of government.
