STRANGLED IN A PICKET FENCE, (Per United Press Association.) i NAPIER, January 18. A stevedore named .John MeGarry met his death in a stratum manner to-night. After knocking off work he was under the influence of liquor, and at S o’clock was found, quite dead in Hardinpe Farad, with his head through a picket fence. He had evidently fallen asleep and been strangled. Several passers by noticed him, but had no idea that he was dead. FATALLY BURNED. An elderly woman named Annia O’Shaughnessy. a resident of East Invercargill, was taken to the hospital yesterdaysuffering from severe bums, particularly on the ttoiler part of Iter face. It appears that she was carrying something which was alight, and fainted while she had it in her hand. She fell on to a mat which caught lire, and the fire c aused the injuries. So serious were the bums that the patient- died late last night. According to particulars available, the des-eoseri mot with her accident on Thursday evening. She lived by herself ami her plight was not discovered until noon yesterday, when site was removed to the hospital.
