MANSON. | The present war was the second in which iPrivnte Andrew Mount Manson took up i arms for King and country, and in it he ■ laid down his life. His first. ; lighting was in the .South African War. j Private Manson is MS years of age, and was jborn at Blackmount Station (Waiaui and e,ducated at the Lower Shotovcr School. At the lime of his enlistment in the 2Sths he was manager for the Public Trustee of Duke Bros’, est-afe, and was also in partnership with his brother in a sheep sSa-tion. Football was his favourite pastime. PRIVATE THOMAS A KEEN. Private Thomas A, Kern, who is reported ! wounded in the right, forearm, is the son ) of Mr and Mrs J. M. Keen, Aparima, where jhe was boni 22 years ago. Before enlist - j ing in the ISth Reinforcement he worked jon his parents’ farm. [ PRIVATE A. G. WHITELAW. Private Alex. G. Whitelaw, who died of pneumonia at Codford military hospital, England, was the fourth son of Agnes and the laic Peter Whitelaw. of Makaj-ewa. He was born at, Ashburton ami educated at the, Mossborn School. He enlisted with the 22nd Reinforcement and was transferred to the 21st. Previous to enlistment he was employed at. bushcraft work in the North. Island, and had also .served on the railways in Queensland. He fought on the western front, ami went through the battie of Messines, where he was slightly wounded. RIFLEMAN C. MULLEN. Rifleman Charles Mullen, who on New Year’s Day laid down his life in the cause of liberty and justice, enlisted in the Rifle Brigade and left with the 26th. Thirty years of age, he was born at Woodlands and afterwards attended school at Kenuington and West Plains, at which latter place his mother, Mrs B. Mullen, now resides. He took over the management of the farm at the early age of fifteen, on the death of his father, and was so employed at the tune of his enlistment. His loss will bo keenly felt by his sorrowing relatives. PRIVATE J. W. REARDON. Born at Longbush 21) years ago and educated at the Woodlands school, Private John William Reardon, who enlisted with the 20th Reinforcements in July, 1916, is now reported to have been killed in France on December 27. This young soldier was well known as a footballer and all-round athlete, and was with his sister a familiar figure in local musical circles. For about three years prior to enlistment he carried on a carrying business, which he disposed of in order to join the colours. John Reardon was a most genial and good-nat-ured fellow, and one of the most popular residents of the Woodlands district.
