OPEN AIR GYMNASIA
DEPUTATION TO MR HANAN,
(Special to the Times.)
WELLINGTON, September 4.
A deputation of Dunedin members of Parliament, comprising Messrs T. K. Sidey, C. E. Statham, and A. Walker, waited upon the Hon. J. A. Hanan (Minister of Education) this afternoon, and stated that they had been asked by the Otago Expansion League to bring under his notice the necessity for establishing open air gymnasia at public schools. The deputation pointed out that the apparatus would not cost more than £2O, and that the system enjoyed • a great advantage over closed in gymnasia, where accumulations of dust were stirred up. They asked that the experiment be tried in some of the schools with a view to its universal adoption. The Minister sympathised with the deputation’s request, but pointed out that the whole question was the need for money. What he could do would depend upon the amount of money the Government would allot to the Education Department for expenditure. Mr Walker asked the Minister if it would be possible for him to get sufficient money from Cabinet to supply an open air gymnasium for one of the public schools in Dunedin as an experiment.
Mr Hanan said he would be very pleased to consider the matter when Cabinet dealt with the supplementary estimates.
