SKBCtT. A. KYBTASTOV. Our Feldwick correspondent writes • Mrs J. Kynaston has just received * telegram from the Minister of Defence informing her that her son, Sergeant Alfred Kynaston, has, on 25th May, been admitted to hospital in France suffering with broncho pneumonia. Fred, who left with the Main Body, and served through the Gallipoli campaign, Egypt, and in France, was well and favourably known in the Western District, where his many friends will wish the brave lad a speedy recovery and a safe return. Much sympathy is extended to Mrs Kynaston, who has had a load of sorrow to bear during the past six months. SEBtJT. M. aicEBZTZZE. Another gallant New Zealander went West when Sergt, Malcolm McKenzie, son of Mr and Mrs R. McKenzie, of Bay road and formerly of Seaward Downs, fell in action. Mr McKenzie yesterday learned the sad tidings through a cable from his son Donald, also in France. The late Sergt. McKenzie was born In the Wyndham Valley 22 years ago and attended the Seaward Downs school. Prior to enlisting with his twin brother, Donald, in the Second Battalion of the Rifle Brigade he followed the carpentering trade. The fallen Southlander was a magnificent stamp of a young colonial and a splendid athlete. Two of his favourite branches were wrestling and bicycle racing, and as a speedy wheeler he was known all over the province. OUimEB E. EDGUTTOIf. Gunner Edward Edglnton, of th* Fourth Reinforcement, is reported to have been wounded in the right side on June 4. He is a son of Mr and Mrs H. Edginton, of Waikiwi, having been born, in Invercargill 85 years ago and schooled at Wathopai. He was, at the time of his enlistment, a partner in the firm of Edginton Bros., nurserymen. Gunner Edglnton, who saw service in Gallipoli, was a typical New Zealander, in that ho was a splendid all-round athlete. Ho has captained the Waikiwi football and cricket teams and for three or four years played beside the scrum for Southland. For two years he captained the provincial Fifteen and it was he- who led the Maroons to victory against the Australians in 1913, Swimming and surfing were also dear to his heart. 2nd LIEUT. BT. L. FORSYTE. On June 8 there fell for the flag 2nd Lieut. Norman Leslie Forsyth, the 26-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Jno. Forsyth, of Riverton. A native of that town, Lieut. Forsyth was educated there and at the Southland Boys’ High School. He was an engineer on the railways, and was Sergt.-major in the Timaru Railway Engineers at the outbreak of war. He left for Samoa as a Corporal in the advance-guard. On the island he had the misfortune to be accidentally but badly shot through the legs, and had to lay up for a long spell. After a slow recovery he resumed duty as Quarter-master-sergeant. In March, 1915, hj« returned to New Zealand and, after a period of three months’ recuperation, re-enlisted as a Private in the Canterbury Infantry of the Eighth Reinforcement. He left New Zealand as a Sergeant, receiving his crown, and then hi* star in the field. While in France he was asked to accept a commission in the Royal Engineers In England, but declined it as he wished to stick to hi* pals. In football, swimming, tennis and rowing he excelled, and his skill with both rifle and rod was widely known.
