THE COAL SITUATION

THE NEW TROUBLE. 1 (Per United Press Association.) STATE MINES AND 'rUNANGA IDLE. GREYMOUTH, April 27. A meeting of Kunanga miners last night decided to discontinue work pending a definite settlement m regard to workmen's tickets on the Rewanui lint. The State mines are idle to-day. The new conditions are in accord with the general curtailment of the period of availability of workmen’s tickets from two to one week for twelve trips. If the mines are worked dally, as there is every indication at present of their doing, twelve trips could be made except on pay week, as there is no work at the mines on alternate. Saturdays. The ticket rate is -Hid per trip. OTHE RMINES WORKING. STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. WELLINGTON, April 27. In connection with the Greymouth strike the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald says he intends to confer with Mr Herries to ascertain how the miners fared in regard to railway concessions as compared with other classes of workers. If other workers had to make sacrifices in this direction it would hardly be fair to make an exception in the case of miners. So far as his information went all the other mines were working. The date for the conference between the representatives of both sides had not been definitely fixed, but he thought it would take place towards the end of next week.
