MONTHLY MEETING. The Southland Land Board met yesterday, the members attending being the Commissioner (Mr Haszard), and Messrs H. J. Middleton, J. Fleming, C. Robertson, and Jas. King. APPLICATIONS FOR LAND. —Under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, 1915. — Sections 4 and 4a, block 5, Mabel Hundred, S4a 2r, S.T.L., Robert Francis Keast.—Approved, land to be proclaimed under the Act. Section 54, block 7, Oteramika Hundied, 36a 36p, S.T.L., Sydney Blacklow.— Approved. Section 37, block 7, Longwood S.D., 168 a 2r 20p, R.L., A. Nickless.—Refused, as the section is unsuitable owing to applicant’s state of health. Section 3, block 22, Jacob’s River Hundred, 297 a 3r sp, R.L., Priscilla E. Brunton. —Approved. Section 27, block 1, Town of East Winton, 3a 2r, Michael Hishon to F. McCurtrie. —Approved. CORRESPONDENCE AND MISCELLANEOUS.

Ranger Martin recommended that a yearly lease of 10/- per annum be granted to Mrs J. Kavaney over section 14, block 11, Town of Wreys Bush, la 2r 39p, and that a similar lease be granted to Geo. O'Connor over section 1, block 8, 2a 4p.—Approved. Messrs Macalister Bros., on behalf of James King, the lessee of sections 7 and 10, block 10, Alton District, 630 a lr 25p, applied in terms of section 52 of the Land Act for a re-hearing in connection with the of re-hearing being granted, they asked for recission of forfeiture and exemption from residence, under section 160 of the Land Act, 1908. —Rehearing granted, and after hearing Mr Wm. Macalister, the Board decided to adhere to its former resolution, the Commissioner dissenting. Messrs J. E. Watson and Co., on behalf of N. R. McKay, the holder of section 8, block 10, Alton district, 375 a 3r 37p, applied for a rehearing of the forfeiture and set out reasons in support of application.—Former resolution rescinded on condition that he gives an undertaking to reside not less than six moths in each year during the war, and supplies a declaration before a J.P. he has resided during that pe^od. J. N. Laurie, of Moffat and Laurie, the lessees of section 9, block 11, Alton district, 284 a 2r 28p, replied to a notice re non-residence. As he now held a section on Merivale settlement he asked to be allowed to purchase or transfer section 9.—Held over. Dickson Jardine notified his acceptance of a renewal lease of run 352 a, Eyre district, at the rental fixed by the Board.—Received.

Mrs Margaret Cameron notified her acceptance of a renewal lease of run 294 a, Eyre district, at the rental fixed by the Board. —Received. Duncan King notified his acceptance of a renewal lease of runs 6 and 420 a, Eyre North, etc., at the rental fixed by fhe Board. —Received. Price Bros., the lessees of run 302 c, Byre district, requested that the Board consider the question of the rental fixed for the renewal term. —Received lessees to be asked to appoint their arbitrator, Mr Martin to be appointed the Board's abitrator.

A. D. Reishman offered £4O for grazing rights for six months over section 3, Ardlussa Settlement, 1790 a.—Refused, and Thos. Muir's offer of £SO accepted.

W. D. West applied for grazing rights over the chain reserve opposite section 4, block 13, Walau S.D., and offered 5/- per annum.—Approved. Norah Fahey, the lessee of section 1, block 2, Mabel Hundred, 62a lr 18p, asked for exemption from residence and for permission to sub-lease the land while the war lasted. —Exemption from residence refused; sub-lease approved on condition that statutory improvements be effected.

Johnston Wylie, on behalf of J. J. and W. A. Wylie, the lessees of section 57 (Lote 1), block 1, Mataura Hundred, 117 a 2r Ssp, complained of the high rental fixed by the Board for the renewal lease. —Rent fixed at 22/- per acre.

The Board was requested to deal with valuations for improvements on Lots 2 gr.H 4 of section 57, block 1, Mataura Hundred. —Valuation to be paid to Mr J. Wylie and the school committee. Ranger Martin reported that Edward Henderson had now sown down sections 9 and 10, Town of Hodgkinson. The Board was requested to deal with valuation for improvements paid on this section. —Valuation to be paid to Mr E. Henderson, the former lessee. W. P. Deal, the lessee of Education endowment runs 193 and 254, Wendon district, 7440 a, requested that at the expiry of present lease he be granted a renewal without competition.—Held over for Ranger's report. P. A. T. Webb, the lessee of section 12, block 11, Alton district, 313 a 2r, notified that he has let a contract for a dwellinghouse, and that he would take up his residence as soon as it is completed.—Held over. H. W. Howden, M. Roderique, H. Rlddcr, R, C. McKenzie and Wm. Wakefield, being lessees of discharged soldiers’ settlement land in the Alton district, applied for exemption from payment of rent for a period of two years, and set out reasons in support.—One year’s remission of rent recommended for the approval of the Hinistfer of Lands. S. Mclntosh, the lessee of section 6a, Ringway settlement, 255 a lr 22p, applied for exemption ' from payment of rent during his absence at the war.—As the property would be worked as formerly, and tlie revenue would be as usual, the Board could not see its way to make a recommendation.

Ranger Martin reported on section 10, block 11, Alton district, 266 a 2r lOp (A. Perkins, lessee), as to residence conditions. —Held over for six months.

Ranger Martin forwarded report on section 6, block 7, Lillburn district, 4a, and recommends sale at auction for cash. —Grazing right granted at 20/- per annum.

Donald McVlcar applied for grazing right over sections 64 and 67, Tuatapere extension No. 2.6 a 2r Bp. Ranger Martin recommended at 20/- per annum. —Approved. Mrs Louisa A. Young applied for grazing rights over Crown land adjoining section 62, block 2, Longwood, 7a, «nd Ranger Martin recommended at 10/per annum. —Approved.

James Murray, the lessee of section 71, block 2, Wlnton Hundred, 154 a 2r 19p, applied for exemption from residence during his absence at the war.—Granted.

D. C. Watson applied for a re-hearing of the forfeiture of section S, block li, Alton District, 302 a 2r. —Board adheres to its former decision, Mr King dissenting.

James Burnett, the licensee of run No. 5, Eyre North and Eyreside districts, 15,130 a, requested that the Board reconsider the rental fixed for renewal lease.—To be ashed to nominate his arbitrator, Ranger Martin to he appointed for the Crown. David Tuffery applied for grazing right over section 66, block 9, Campbelltown Hundred, 88Ga Ir lOp, and offered £5 per annum.—Approved. The Chief Surveyor submitted plan by District Surveyor Otway for approval,

sections 126 and 130, block 3, Eyre District, 53a Ir 24p, tlaxmlll site, etc. — Approved.

James Watkins asked that he be allowed to put a sledge hut on chain reserve below the Cllfden bridge. Ranger Corcoran reported on application.—Approved at 10/- per year under section 130 of the Land Act.

A. F. B. Sutherland, a lessee, as tenant in common of sections 7a, 15 and 16, block 5, Lindhurst Hundred, 260 a 3r 7p, applied for remission of half the rent during his absence at the war.— Remission of half-year’s rent recommended for the approval of the Minister of Lands during tenant’s absence at the war.

The Board was requested to decide re disposal of £47 2/3 paid by Edward Horrell for improvements on sections 8 and 0, block 5, Wendonside S.D.—Left in the Commissioner’s hands with power to act. W. O. Kempthorne, the lessee of small grazing run No 30, Takitimo S.D., 3876 a, applied for remission of rent during his absence at the war. —Held over.
