Mr Lowden, in returning thanks to the electors (of whom a large number assembled at the booth), referred to the benefit of the drainage works which had been laid down and which had been demonstrated by the fact that during the last' month there- hpd been over 50 case* of diphtheria in Southland, and not one case in Mataura.

Mr Brown also thanked the electors who had supported him, and after cheers had been given for both candidates ths returning officer received a vote •£ thanks-
