SHEARERS' ACCOMMODATION
AMENDED LEGISLATION NECESSARY. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 25. A deputation from .the New Zealand Agricultural and Pastoral Workers’ Union, which includes the Shearers’ Association, waited UP M r Henries, ActingMinister of Labour, to-day to urge that the .Shearers' Accommodation Act be amended to provide better accommodation for men. Mainy instances were cited Where the sleeping, eating, and cooking accommodation for shearers on stations was absolutely inadequate, and somewhat remarkable disclosures were made regarding the manner in which. Maori shearers and their women folk ’herded together. The Minister, replying, said the Department was doing its best to comply With the provisions of the Act, but the trouble was that it did not go far enough. The matter was one for amended legislation, and he would lay the representations made before the Cabinet and see What could he done, although the possibility was that Parliament would confine itself to war measures.
