The Te Anau, which has been undergoing repairs at Dunedin, arrived at Bluff yesterday morning, and will discharge general cargo from Dunedin today. A Home liner is also in port, and ■*ill commence loading operations today. The ferry service will be maintained tor the present by the Mararoa and the Pateena till full supplies of eoal are assured. The coastal steamer Kotare was due at Dunedin yesterday from Tlmaru, and will sail to-day for Invercargill and Biverton. Steel merchant vessels building or under contract to be built In private American shipyards on January 1, according to builders’ returns to the Bureau of Navigation, Department of Commerce, number 403, of 1,495,601 gross tons, the largest tonnage in the history of American shipbuilding. During December American yards finished nine steel merchant vessels of 24,363 gross tons, and made new contracts for 29 vessels of 405,120 gross tons. Builders expect to launch during the current year 357 vessels of 1,250,722 gross tons; those which will not be launched until some time in 191S amount to 16 vessels mt 244,879 gross tons.

The barometer has been unsteady. Moderate variable •wlncls prevailed to-day. Present indications are for a predominance of moderate to strong westerlies and southerlies. with cloudy and unsettled weather and rain in many parts. The barometer lias a falling tendency, especially in the BCUtll.
