SOUTHLAND EGG-LAYING COMPETITION

The following are the results of the Southland Egg-laying Competition, held at Kew, for the first Week, ending Tuesday, April 17:— Pen Daily Grand No. Laying. Total.

THE OFFICIAL OPENING.

The official opening of the second Southland egg-laying competition took place at Kew yesterday, a large number of people being present, including a goodly proportion of country visitors who are interested in poultry. The grounds were in tip-top order, the weather corresponded to one of Southland’s finest autumn days, and tlie function was a most happy one throughout. Included amongst those present were the Mayor (Mr D. McFarlane), Councillors T. D. Lennie, T. O’Byme, and I. L. Petrie, and Mr C. Provan (Riverton). During an interval afternoon tea was served, and a collection was taken up on behalf of the Red Cross Fund, the response being a liberal one. Mr A. F. Hawke, chairman of the Hospital nad Charitable Aid Board, which body has provided the space for the pens, officially declared the competition open. In doing so Mr Hawke dwelt in facetious strain on the merits of poultry keeping, instancing whati had been done in his home establishment. Speaking seriously. Mr Hawke said that he thought that the competition was a good thing. He congratulated the Southland Egg Circle for having inaugurated it and hoped that the pleasing results of the competition that had been just concluded would be exceeded in so far as ’the competition that had just commenced was concerned. He thought that the movement would continue to receive support and that many of those who had fowls would support future competitions. Mr Hawke then presented the prizes to the successful competitors at the previous competition. Mr F. Harwell, president of the Southland Egg Circle, in tlie course of a few remarks, thanked the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the valuable assistance they had given the movement, which had proved successful in every way. Thereafter the pens were inspected by the visitors ,and entire approval was expressed of the methods employed by the painstaking caretaker (Mr Cowan). Everything was in apple-pie order, and, if environment counts for as much as is claimed for it. then the second Southland egg-laying competition should prove even more successful than the inaugural one undoubtedly was.
