Carbonate provides useful bacteria with food, and also the right conditions for their work. Carbonate ensures the destruction of decaying organic matter iand by this means heat is supplied to the soil, and it is kept sweet, otherwise it would become sour and less fertile and this feature is of great advantage to the pasture. Carbonate ought to be mixed with or sown at the same time as artificial or other manures. No grain crops should be grown in lands deficient in Lime. Its presence tends to produce good strong straw and a hard dense grain. Lime has a marked influence in checking fungoid diseases in root crops, especially potatoes and turnips.
