WINTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The first annual show under the auspices of the above society was held in the Kink Hall, Winton, on Wednesday last. It was conducted by a committee of the Presbyterian Church. The magnificent displays tinder the various sections was a revelation to all, and it is particularly gratifying to the promoters to have such a large entry and such Keen interest by the public and exhibitors alike. The blooms were of the choicest, while the fruit and vegetable exhibits were of a very high order, while in every class of the industrial sections the exhibition warranted the highest praise, the numerous exhibits giving evidence of taste, skill, and patience. It was particularly pleasing to note the enthusiasm of the juveniles, whose sections were quite a feature of the show. Mr E. J. Service acted as judge for the flower, vegetable, and fruit sections, and remarked upon the all-round excellence of the exhibits. He said the show quite exceeded his expectations: in fact it was a remarkable display considering the lateness of the season. He was quite convinced from what he had seen that the Society had a great future before it. Commenting upon the decorative section, Mr Service thought there was too much bunching, and in places the blending of colours was faulty. The dahlias were exceptionally good, as also were the sweet peas and asters. The pot plants also came in for high commendation. The apples were a revelation in what Southland could produce, and Mr Service considered they would take a lot of beating in any part of the dominion. In the potato section many of the exhibitors sacrificed quality for size. Special praise is due to Messrs R. M. Gilmour ( secretary), C. T. Grant, John Rowan, T. Walker, and Adam Hamilton, as the success of the show was mainly due to their untiring efforts. The attendances both in the afternoon and evening were large. The Municipal Band gave a programme in front of the hall, while an orchestra, under Mr R. M. Gilmour, rendered selections in the evening. PRIZE LIST. —Section I—Cut Flowers — Judge: Mr E. J.
