EPPECnVE WORK BY RIVER GUNBOATS RETREATING TURKS SEVERELY PUNISHED (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn & Reuter) LONDON, March 4. Received March 4, 11.15 p.m. The Admiralty announces that the Mesopotamia river gunboats Tarantula, Mantis and Motes came in contact with and passed the retreating Turkish army westward of Shumrau on February 26. They inflicted heavy losses and captured or destroyed four Turkish steamers, and a number of barges containing ammunition.

RUSSIAN SUCCESS IN PERSIA CAPTURE OP RAMADAN TURKS BEING PURSUED TEHERAN, March 4. Received March 4, 11.15 p.m. The Russians captured Hamadan and are pursuing the retreating enemy.
