THE HAWKE'S BAY SEAT
SIR JOHN FINDLAY’S CANDIDATURE. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 21. Sir John Findlay has decided to seek election for Hawke’s Bay. He left Wellington for Hastings to-day. He states that he received a request numerously signed from the people of the district, and he was unanimously selected by the Liberal League Convention. He was also requested to stand by a large number of the Reform party. Sir John Findlay's candidature had the joint approval of Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward. ’T understand,” he added, “that neither officially nor unofficially will there be any opposition to my candidature on the part of the Reform party. I propose to view the election entirely on national lines, and in support of the present National Government.” HOW THE POSITION STANDS. REFORM PARTY SUPPORTS FINDLAY, OTHER CANDIDATES. WELLINGTON, February 21. Sir John Findlay has telegraphed his acceptance of the nomination for the Hawke’s Bay seat as the Government nominee. Mr Jull has definitely withdrawn. Mr S. M. Campbell held a meeting last night, and announced that he would not oppose Sir John Findlay. The Hawke’s Bay branch of the. Reform League handed the following statement to the press:— "An agreement was come to between leaders of the Liberal and Reform parties that during the term of the National Ministry any seat held by either of the respective parties should go, when vacant, to that party without opposition from the other. The Hawke’s Bay seat having become vacant through the death of Dr McNab, the Liberal party have the right of nomination. Sir John Findlay having been nominated as the official Liberal candidate, the Reform League will in no way oppose his election, and in the circumstances urges all supporters of the Reform party to vote for him.” Mr Slmson is still in the field, and it is reported here that Mr Atmore, Nelson, Intends standing in the Labour interests.
Mr A. L. D. Fraser, another prospective candidate, invites his supporters to meet him on Friday night.
