RANGER WOUNDED
SHOT AT BY POACHER. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 25. James Main, the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society's ranger at Lake Ellesmere, was shot at by a poacher whom he endeavoured to apprehend on Sunday night, one pellet lodging in his right thigh and another just above the right eye. A few months back he was assaulted by a party of poachers and injured about tlie head, the offenders never being brought to justice.
