Received July 24, 5.30 p.m. Austrian communique: Being threatened with a strong Russian attack southeast of Tarbarov, we withdrew the troops that were fighting on the Magura towards the principal ridge of the Carpathians. RUSSIAN VICTORIES. CAUSASUS CAMPiLIGN PROMISING. PETKOGRAD, July 24. Received July 21, 10.30 p.m. General Sakharoff’s victories along the Lipa river bring the total of General Brussiloff’s prisoners since June 8 to 300,000. General Sakharoff’s successes for a week alone cost the mans 50,000 casualties, being a third of the total of the German forces on the Lipa sector. Details of a great battle along the Lower Dvina, which lias been proceeding for a week, continue to be meagre. It is reported • that the Russians in one place advanced five miles, capturing Kemmern, twenty miles west of Riga, and have also driven the Germans across the Nusse from the Kekkau river which flows into the Dvina, thirteen miles south of Riga. Meanwhile the Grand Duke’s summer campaign in the Caucasus is extremely promising, and the weather is good. The Russians captured Ardasa, whereby they secured all hut the last thirty miles of a great military road running from Trebizond and Erzcroum to Erzinyan. The Russians have still a range of seven thousand feet to cross before they reach Erzinyan from Keikichiftelk. AN AUSTRIAN REPORT.» RUSSIAN INVASION OP HUNGARY. THE DELUDED AUSTRIAN PUBLIC. VIENNA, July 24. Received July 24, 10.30 p.m. • It is stated that numerous detachments of Russian cavalry are raiding Hungary, north and south of Borsa, forty miles south-east of Marmorossziged. There is no Russian confirmation of the news which may be intended to break bad news to the hitherto deluded Austrian public. RUSSIAN CAPTURES. PETKOGRAD, July 23. Received July 24, 8.10 p.m. The 27,000 prisoners mentioned in the communique are Austro-Germans captured along the Lipa.
