A London cable announces the death of Lord Clifford, of Chudleigh, at the age of 65 years. Mr Win. H'raser was at last night's meeting of the Town Council appointed to the position of rates clerk. A London cable states that Dr. Tasker (Principle of the Wesleyan College, Birmingham), has been elected President of the Wesleyan Conference. Councillor Dunlop stated at last flight s meeting of the Town Council that, owing to his not being in good health, he proposed resigning his seat. Ihe legislation that was promised provided that the Council could fill any such vacancy, so that the Borough would not be put to any expense by the action he proposed to take. A London cable states that Sir Douglas Mawson has been gazetted an embarkation staff officer, carrying the rank of captain. He will be stationed at Liverpool. A Reuter's cable from London reports that Lieut, .lames Falrweather, of the Naval Volunteer Reserve, an experienced Dundee whaler, has been appointed to command the Shackleton relief ship. A Wellington telegram slates that Mr K. J. L. Whiting, telegraphist, Wanganui, has been elected unopposed to represent the Post and Telegraph Department on the Public Service Superannuation Board. Word has been received that Dr c. H. Gordon, of Riverton, met with an accident in Prance. When motoring to Boulogne, on his way to England on leave, the ear skidded and overturned, striking a tree. At the time of writing Dr Gordon had been in hospital for about a fortnight, but he expected in a few days to be well enougti to continue his journey. __
