The. Public Works Estimates contain very few new votes, arid practically all the old votes are renewed, says our Wellington correspondent. The following are new items for the Southland district —Reading Aparlma No. 4 block, Wallace, £1000; reading Grove Bush block, 11000; Invercargill gaol, £3000; raising Post Office tower and additions, £720. In connection with the brake advertised to leave from Allen's Hall to-day, the time of departure has been altered to 2.15 p.m. About 9.20 p.m. yesterday the Fire Brigade received a call to what proved to be a shower of sparks issuing from Messrs Fleming and Co.'s flourmill chimney. Eighteen military prisoners readied Bluff by the s.s. Paloona, which arrived on Monday night from Melbourne, being an accumulation of deserters and men who had missed their passages at Albany. They were taken over by a military guard on arrival, and sent on to headquarters to be dealt with.

The Mayor (Mr D. Mr Hall (Attorney-General) unveiled an obelisk at Greta (New South Wales) recently, as a memorial to 220 men wh# have gone from that town on active.service. The Minister, in the course of a brief speech, said that one out of every nine members of the population of th# town had responded to the call to arips. This was probably a record for Australia, and in years to come the offspring of those whose names appeared on th« monument would be prouder than th* offspring of those whose names were not on it.

On Wednesday, August 2, in the Municipal Theatre, the commercial traveller* of Southland, assisted by other local talent, will give a grand concert in aid of the Soldiers' Club. Such a deserving institution must receive liberal financial support, and the onus of the burden will have to be borne by the people of Invercargill. The travellers have realised that the demand on funds of the Club for its upkeep must be heavy, and have decided to do their bit towards finding the necessary finances. The public have not forgotten the part the travellers played in the recent Queen Carnival, and the success which met their efforts to entertain ihem, is sure to be repeated on this occasion. A capital programme has been arranged, full particulars of which will be advertised later.

A feature of the entertainment of th* .Japanese sailors hy tho Auckland Worn* en's Patriotic League ivas a speech made by Mr Kaneo Nishi, of the engineering staff of th flagship Iwate. Mr Nishi was born in Canada, and joined the Japanea* Navy on the outbreak of war. His English is perfect, and the New Zealand Herald states that his speech was listened to with much interest. "Many of our men cannot speak English,” he said, "and therefore they cannot tell you by speech how much they have enjoyed th* welcome the people of Auckland have given them, but if you look around you will see that every one of them is smiling. We men of the Japanese Navy are with you heart and soul in the great war; indeed, in your own language, 1 may say all of us are •kicking’ at not having had a chance to fight with you in the Jutland battle. We would like tc. have handed to the Germane our very regards. and handed it to them hot. We are proud to be your Allies, and will stick to you for ever, even to tne last”

A close investigation of all the circumstances surrounding the fire at Government House at Auckland on Saturday night have failed to reveal any clue us to the origin u£ the outbreak.- It is understood that experts who vie vert the gutted structure arc increasingly inclined to believe that it cannot effectively he restored without .completely rebuilding, for apart from the estimated cost of the work some £BOOO or £7OOO (exclusive of course of furnishing) tq© building is looked upon as being out-of-date and totally unsuitable for a modern Vice-regal residence. —Press Association. Here is an extract given bv the Spectator from the letter of a soldier in Flanders to his parents, on the news that his brother had been killed In action- - ‘I have seen many a breach In the circle in which I live, but we hardly think of them us dead. it is more like school, where each term brings fresh ■♦'aces while others are missed. ft is :easy for us. It is those at home who feel the blow most when It comes. But the compensations are very real, especially in this war of wars, in which the duty to go is so clear. It is far better never to return than never to have been." *

Mr Reid, Chief Inspector of Mines, and Mr Paul, inspector at Thames, visited White Island, in the Bay of Plenty, last week. They'found that the whole floor of an old lake was raised up at the time of the last explosion, and is now. dry land. It is believed that the explosion caused an overhanging cliff to fall, choking the blowhole, and causing a new*outlet in the stream bed of the lake, which rose up. the water running into the sea. It is thought that the inspectors’ report will not be unfavourable to proposals to again work the sulphur deposits on the Island.
