Private advice has been received that Lieutenant Roy Herman, a younger son of Mr Percy Herman, late of Christchurch, was killed in action in [Crance. He left with the main body as a private. He was promoted to commissioned rank at Gallipoli, and went through that campaign without a scratch. He was 23 years of age, and was educated at Christ's College. He was prominent in athletic circles. His elder brother (Captain Cedric Herman ) is also serving with the New Zealanders in France.

Speed, who is reported wounded, is a weij.known Wanganui sportsman and racehorse owner, and a steward of the Wanganui Jockey Club. In his younger days he was a prominent Wellington representative footballer. RZFZiZTMAH J, B. KA CHEAT Rifleman John Robert Mat-kay, reported wounded in the left leg on July ill, is a son of Mrs M. Mackay, i.f Clifton. and the late Mr Wrn. Mackay. He was born at Palmerston North, and educated at the Clifton. Invercargill South, and Southland Boys' High Schools. He was employed as a railway clerk at Bluff, when, on October 12, loir>, he enlisted with the Jrd Battalion of the New Zealand Bide Brigade (Karl of Liverpool's Own I- He "’Us a member of the South - ern Football Club, and was a Past Ora ml of the Oroha Lodge So. 11, South Invercargill. PRIVATE J. DEVERETJX. Private Joseph hevereux, reported wounded in the left thigh, on July 12. is the youngest son of the late Mr A. .1. Hevereux. formerly of Winton, and who removed to Wa.ika.ia. 2H years ago Private Hevereux. was educated at Waikaia, and by occupation is a general labourer. He lel’l with the Mth Reinforcements. He is the youngest of seven brothers, one of whom (Mr P. hevereux; is well-known in the Winton district. trooper a. r. surra.
