SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODIIED. The successful hurdler, Patronymic, who scored on the second and third days of the Wellington K.C.’s Winter fixture, is not engaged in the Grand National Hurdle Race or the Sydenham Hurdles, the leading events over the battens at the C..1.C. Winter gathering next month. Prior to his success at Trent ham the son of i'atronns had won one event, a hurdle race at Egmont.

U is conjectured in some quarters Unit Mr Ralph intends to have another try for the Auckland Cup with El Gallo. The owner of the crack northern jumper states that he would have made an attempt to secure the Wellington Steeplechase had his horse been awarded .Albs less weight, or 12.1, to be precise.

The running of the Hon. .1. D. Ormond’s horse, Vascular, at Hastings and Trentham shows that the son of Vasco is coming on. Ho is a very promising steeplechaser, and claims an engagement in the X. 54. Grand National .Steeplechase.

It transpires (hat the steeplechasers Caseshot and Heatherlea left for Riccarton in charge of jockey .1. 11. Kaan, the claim of J. Lindsay to have control of the pair being linfounded. Mr A, K. Ward, who trains the horses referred to, will follow on north at a later stage.

At the Wellington R.C.’s meeting on Thursday last T. Pritchard, the rider of Try Again in the Selling Race, was suspended for three months for interfering with Strabo.

.I’. T. Hogan's charge,, Dalton, completed his qualifying runs witli the Birchwood Hunt on Saturday last, and will make one of the Rorke’s Drift Lodge team to journey on to Riccarton this week.

The young steeplechaser, Wirokino, who got in the winning lists at the Hawke’s Bay J.G. and Wellington R.C. meetings recently, is stated to be likely to develop into a more than ordinarily useful horse over country later on. The son of Conjuror, who lias been nominated for the Grand National Steeplechase, is only a five-year-old.

The unlucky mare. Cherry Blossom, by San Fran—Prize Bloom, who lias finished in second place on quite a number of occasions of late, is engaged in the Winter Cup and may prove to be cherry ripe, by August 10. She, is owned by Mr F. Armstrong, owner of the recentlydefunct cross-country horse Morning.

At a meeting’ of the executive of the Birchwood Hunt held at Otautau on Friday evening it was decided to hold the Club’s second totalisator meeting on September 25 (Dominion. Day) at Riverton, and to increase the stakes to £l5O, adding to last year’s programme another open flat race. The programme now consists of four hunters’ events (open only to qualified hunters) and four open events. In addition, several valuable trophies have also been donated. Mr W. A. Saunders was appointed handicapper. Nominations will close early in September, and two special runs will be held next month to give further horses a chance to qualify.

A private message from Melbourne announces the death of a well-known exOtago breeder and sportsman, Mr J. R. Mackenzie, who has for some years past beep residing in Victoria. During his carper as an owner in New Zealand Mr Mackenzie raced quite a number of useful horses, including Phaetontis (who subsequently won the Grand National Steeplechase in the late Mr J. Buckley's colours). Paladin, Pallas, Trentbridgc, Canada, Maple Leaf, and others. Tne deceased sportsman also supported the light harness game on occasions, but it was asi an importer and breeder of Clydesdale hprses that ho was generally best known. For some time, Mr A. E. Ward, now mine host of the Globe Family Hotel at Riverton and trainer of the well-known steeplechasers, Caseshot and Heatherlea, acted as private mentor to Mr Mackenzie with some success.

From the handicap lists published elsewhere in connection with the forthcoming Grand National fixture at Riccarton it will be noted that the Southland-owned horse, Korke’s Drift, has caught it warm, in that lie is asked to head the poll in both the Winter Cup and G. N. Hurdle Race assessments, his weight in each race being 11.9. As the son of Calibre has never yet started in a hurdle race, Mr Henrys ranks him highly to ask him to concede poundage to the picked horses of the land. In the G.N. Hurdles Crib follows the Southlander with 11.2, which reads as if the weight-ad-juster was highly impressed with the performances of the son of Sant Ilario at Oamaru recently and Trentham last week. In the Grand National Steeplechase the three Southlanders engaged. Black Sea, Heatherlea, and Recharge, have been let in at the minimum weight of 0.7, and must be classed as very nicely treated, where the fences take jumping and the battle is not always to the swift.

BIBCHWOOD HUNT. CLOSING RUN AT OTAUTAU. The closing mn of the season took place in Otautau on Saturday in fine but foggy weather, and a large number of horses finished their qualification runs. The followers before the start were marshalled by the Master and asked, in the interests of the Club to individually put a stop to horsemen Indiscriminately breaking the fences so kindly and generously placed at the Club’s disposal by Messrs Lindsay, Norman, Gould, Thornton and Macdonald. Huntsman (W. Ledingham) on Cody, Whip (E. Kills) on Sunset, Master (A. V. Saunders) on Chelsea Hark, W. Robinson on Dalton, Mr Jos. Taylor on Zingabee, Mr Williams on Te Tua, Mr Walker on Walmahaka, Mr .las. Ryan on Parramatta, Mr Evans on Miss Trixie, Mr Mackey on True Dove, Mr Peter Ellis on Gold Patch, Mr .1. Gately on Ohio, Mr N. Gateiy on St. Aron and B. Taylor on Somcrsalt were some of the horses that applied for qualification, At the finish of the first run horsemen and spectators were treated to afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs W. Keith. At the conclusion of the meet hearty cheers wore given for the landowners who had placed their fields and fences so often at the disposal of the Hunt.
