GRAIN TRAFFIC

—.— last wkkk’s- fk:ukj:,s. Not wit li.staiulin.cr the fact that the prerent grain reason i < nimenc.cd comparalively early, the quantity of grain that is be in a conveyed over the Southland section of railways continues to be well ahead of that whirl] was conveyed in recently previous years. As lias been previously noted, the Southland section of railways extends to Waipahi, and takes in the lleriot branch. It / Will therefore be seen that a very large quantity of the grain which is raised in Southland is not exported from muff, but is finally disposed of at Otago’s chief port.' During the piesent grain season Hie Southland section of the New Zealand railways has had no block in regard to tile supplying of waggons, and a word of praise has to be bestowed on the Kailway Department in this direction. The supply of trucks allowed the Southland section is limited, and as the demands from the north are in truck value more than (hat which comes from the south, the .Southland section has always a difficulty in asserting its rights in regard to the number of trucks at its disposal. When the large and increasing quantity of coal that is dally carried over the Southland section is take-n into consideration, it is obvious that in the near future something must he done in the matter of relieving the block which occasionally occurs in the matter of supplying trucks. That this difficulty lia-s been surmounted during the current season in the matter of supplying waggons for grain is distinctly a credit to the officers concerned in the Southland section. Following were the quantities conveyed last week, and for the corresponding period of last year : I
