SPORTING

’ NOTES BY SIR MODRED. The Wellington R.C.’s Winter meeting? opens at Trentham this afternoon and continues over Thursday and Saturday. The principal events to-day will lie the Wellington Steeplechase, of 3 000 sovs (.about three miles and a quarter). Winter Hurdles, of IiOO sovs (two miles), and the Parliamentary Handicap, of 400 govs (one mile and a quarter). The nume of Inverlea Lass has been claimed for the filly by Pallas—Cisco Rose, bred at Mr H. 'Rubber's Heddon Bush Stud on behalf of a Palmerston North owner. In his opening speech at the annual meeting of the N.Z. Trotting Conference yesterday the president stated that during the past season the sum of £68,225 was given away in stakes by the combined trotting clubs during the current season, being a little over £SOOO in excess of lust year. In addition to tha trotting club’s stakes, owners also rewived approximately £7OOO subscribed by racing clubs for 90 trotting events included on racing programmes, making an aggregate of £75,000 given in stakes during the season.

At the monthly meeting of the Winton .T. C. last week the offer of the Winton Trotting Club to pay a third of the cost of the installation of the telephone was accepted.—The secretary reported that ho had supplied the Racing Confer, ence with the necessary information as to the amount contributed to war funds and the amount paid in war tax.—lt was decided that any member two years in arrears with his subscription be not supplied with a copy of the annual balance sheet and report.—Accounts amounting to £l9 5s were passed for payment.

During: the course of the presidential address at the opening: of tlje Trotting Conference yesterday some interesting figures were given showing the amount subscribed by trotting clubs alone since the outbreak of war. In addition to the £12,000 odd which constituted the trotting club’s subscriptions during the first year of the war, they have been responsible this season for nearly £40,000. Tins sum is made up in subscriptions to vari- - ous funds, total net profits of race meetings and war taxes, and does not include, roughly, £30,000 to total amount paid by the trotting clubs as the usual tax imposed annually by the Government. As< the war tax was not imposed until November, when the season was well advanced, several clubs were not affected, otherwise the amount would have been much greater. These figures are apart altogether from those of racing clubs.

■A special drag will leave the Post Office at 2 o’clock this afternoon for Wallacetown in connection with an outing promised by the Birchwood Hunt. The runs pf the hounds should prove interesting, as several well-known horses will be stripped for qualifying runs- in view of the forthcoming Grand National and Birchwood Hunt racing fixtures.

Followers of trotting will be interested in an advertisement appearing elsewhere, announcing that Wright, Stephenson and Co. will sell at Gore Horse Bazaar on Saturday, July 22, on l>ehalf of Mr Friedlander, five three-year-old geldings and fillies and seven two-year-old geldings and fillies, the whole being by Harold Dillon and King Cole from wellknown mares.
