A Washington cable reports that a bill aimed at the - ‘Tellow Press" has been, introduced in Congress. It makes it punishable to publish a false report or rum. our bearing on the international relations of the United Stales tending to affect peaceful relations with other countries. The inspectors of the Stock Department were very busy yesterday at the Wallacetown stock sale placarding pens in which were contained sheep that were allegedly "lousy." A good deal of comment was occasioned in consequence. Prosecutions will follow in each instance as a result.

Addressing the Labour League Mr Griffith, Minister for Education in New South attacked jurymen. He said it was hopeless for a prominent Labourite to expect a verdict from a jury of property-owners on account of the Fair Rents Act, no matter how gross the injury or how complete the evidence.

We have often heard of animals dying from a "broken heart." The other day Mr R. Jamieson killed one of two pigs that had been reared together from suckers. The next morning lie discovered the remaining one dead in the sty. A district resident had at one time two pet lambs. One died. The other was so heart-broken that it was afterward* found dead alongside its mate.

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution that the suggested tax on war profits was wrong in principle, and will in numerous cases result in grave injustice. It recommended more liberal provision to meet cases of hardship, and resolved that the proposed method of assessing the standard of income must prove ineffective in the case of farmers. The chamber considers that a tax on all exports which, have increased in value since August, 1914. should he imposed.

Tt is understood that a conference ■will be held in regard to the question of the early closing of hotels during war time, between the representative of the two parties, wires our Parliamentary correspondent. The supporters of early closing will be represented by .Messrs Anderson, Craigie, and Wilkinson, whilst the other side wilt he represented by .Messrs W, If. Field, Htatham, and Wilford. On all sides opinions are expressed that the weekly stock sales at Wallacetown have come to stay, and the usual expression is in the direction that it is n pity that they did not happen sooner. The entries collectively , taken on a monthly basis, show a marked increase compared with any similar period during which fortnightly sales were held, and, apart from the extra revenue derived and the greater importance given the Southland's metropolis as a stock centre, the convenience accorded all round is so well realised and appreciated that a reversion to the old order Of things would prove most unpopular. Our Parliamentary correspondent ■Wires:—The continued absence from the House of the Prime Minister owing to indisposition is delaying the business of the session to some extent. Practically the whole of yesterday afternoon’s sitting of the House was filled in by marking time on a departmental report presented by Sir J. G- Ward which, as it related to public buildings, afforded members an opportunity of initiating a discussion regarding the delay in the progress of the new Parliament building. The fact that several members have been, or are now, suffering from influenza and colds, rightly or wrongly attributed to draughts and defective ventilation, was seized upon as an argument for hastening the transfer of members to the chamber in the new buildings, even before the remainder of the building, has been completed. The Hon. A. T. Ngata, who made a speech edged with keen satire, said that in the opinion of the public the work done by Parliament, even at the best of times was "rotten," and that therefore it did not matter a great deal in the said public’s opinion where the Legislature did their work. In regard to the embellishments of the new buildings he made an eloquent plea for recognition of the beauties of Maori architecture. Mr Glover asked that the architecture of the Cook Islands should not be forgotten in the adornments of the new building.

Mr T. -McKenzie has sold His farm at South Hillend to Mr Diamond, of Waianiwa.
