OUSE STOCK SAX.E. The fortnightly stock sale at the Gore Corporation Yards was held on Tuesday in fine weather and in the presence of a large number of. farmers. Owing to recent rain and frosts, the sheep races were in a very slushy condition. The sale on the whole was a good one, and from a vendor's point of view probably the best held for many years.. Only about half a dozen pens were passed in, and sheep in anything like fain condition and of good ages sold exceedingly well. Fat wethers realised as high as 31/4 arid 30/1, and a pen of two-tooth ewes (a fine lot) In lamb to B.L. rams realised 31/2. Forward conditioned ewes and mixed sex lambs also sold well. The man- with good conditioned sheep to sell just now, judging by today’s sale, is in a happy position. The values of fat sheep and-good two-tooth ewes were anything from 6/- to 8/- per head better than at the July sale last year. Mixed sex lambs and soundmouth store ewes were fully 4/- to 6/per head better than 12 months ago. Fat Cattle —205 were penned, including several pens of prime heavy bullocks. Prices opened at from 10/- to 15/- below last week's rates, but gradually hardened to late late. Best bullocks, 117 10/- to £2O; extra prime heavy, £25; medium, £l4 to £l6 10/-; best cows and heifers, £ls 10/- to £l7; extra prime, £l9; others, £9 to £l3. Fat Sheep—27oo penned. The majority were medium and light-wegihts. Well finished sheep were firm, but ewes were a shade easier, graziers bidding keenly for forward wethers. Best wethers, 32/to 37/-: extra heavy. 42/6; medium to good, 27/6 to 31/6; light and unfinished, 23/6 to 26/6; best ewe-, 26/- to 30/-; extra, 3S/3;medium to good, 216 to 25/-; aged and inferior, 10/- to 15/-. Lambs —1100 penned. There was a keen demand, and prices were firm. Best, 21 - to 28/-; extra, 35/'-; medium, 19/6 to 22/6. Pigs—Large yarding. Fats' prices were slightly easier. CHRISTCHURCH. July 5. At the Addington stock market there were large entries of fat cattle and fat sheep, but smaller yardiugs of fat lambs and store sheep. Fat cattle sold at rather firmer rates, and fat lambs showed no change. The fat sheep market showed a further advance in prime sheep. Store cattle were dull of sale, but dairy cows were in keen demand. Pigs, except haveners, sold freely. SIT OAK SUPPLY. LABOUR TROUBLES IN FIJI. AUCKLAND, July 5. The sugar supply is threatened by labour trouble at Fiji, It is understood that the locomotive drivers, 12 in number, struck to support a demand for shorter hours. According to a cable received by the Auckland manager, the men have torn up their agreements and struck for nine hours per day and overtime. The Auckland secretary of the Enginedrivers* Union has received the following cable from the strikers: — "Warn men against accepting employment in Fiji. Men here on strike for eight-hour day.” Mr Philson states that the men are paid £4 10/- weekly. It is believed that the men affected all came from Sydney. The Auckland manager was asked to supply 12 men, who have been obtained, and will be shipped to Fiji at an early date. There might be some embarrassment, he says, in regard to the despatch of sugar, but it would be only temporary. marine insurance. MEDITERRANEAN THE DANGER SPOT. WELLINGTON, July 5. The insurance authorities state that the rise in marine insurance applies only to goods shipped via Panama to the Mediterranean and via Suez to allied countries in the Mediterranean.
