AGRICULTURAL EVENTS FOR WEEK ENDING fEBEUABY 26. —Wednesday, February 23. — Stock sale at Kapuka. —Thursday, February 23. Stock sale at Wyndham. —Friday, February 24. — Stock sale at Waikaka. Stock sale at Lumsdcn. WALLACETOWN STOCK SALE. A LARGE YARDING. FAT CATTLE DECLINE. GOOD DEMAND FOR STORES. The fortnightly Wallacetown stock sale, which was held yesterday, was well attended by farmers and buyers, and the weather throughout was good. The yarding all round was a big one, and in the case of some classes of stock values showed a decline compared to recent previous sales. Following were the yardings yesterday, and for the two preceding sales::— Feb. 22. Feb. S. Jan. 25. Fat cattle .. 294 304 262 Store cattle .. 994 520 704 Fat sheep .. 984 620 1110 Store sheep .. 820 ' 731 840 FAT CATTLE. There was an extra large yarding, being just a few short of the previous week, which was a record for the yards. Included in the yarding were a few pens of good bullocks, but taken all over the yarding was* of very medium quality: in fact, many of the cattle forward had small claims to be placed in the fat pens. Owing to a temporary block at the freezing works, freezing operators were not buying as extensively as otherwise would have been the case, and, although butchers were on the market to fill requirements, their requirements seemed to be comparatively easy to fill. Good cattle sold fairly well, but In comparison' with recent sales there was fully a decline of £1 for prime stuff. For unfinished sorts the demand was by no means keen, and they receded as much as 30/- per head. A number of graziers operated when they saw the state of the market, and this was the means of a larger quantity being sold than otherwise would have been the case. Fully one-third of the yarding was returned unsold. It would not be surprising if in the future a serious block took place in regard to shipping. The quantity of stuff already killed lias been extensive, especially in regard to cattle, one export buyer alone having put through from 800 to 1000 head. Prices ruling were;— Prime ox, 41/- to 42/-; heifer, 39/- to 40/-; cow, 37/- to 38/-. FAT SHEEP. There was a fairly large yarding, and, although the quality forward was fair, there was nothing entered so prime as was the case in connection with the previous recent sales. There was a good demand from butchers, outside as well as local, the result being good to vendors. Anything really prime sold well, one pen of wethers fetching 28/3. There were a number of pens of decent ewes and prime sorts went from 23/- to 24/-. All over, the sale may be characterised as-a fairly good one, prices being firm. Freezing buyers were operating, especially on ewes, and butchers hail to outbid them, which kept up prices. Prices were as follow: —Extra prime butchers’ wethers, 26/- to 28/-; prime do., 24/- to 25/-; medium. 22/- to 23/-; extra prime ewes, 25/- to 25/6;- prime, 23/- to 23/6; medium and unfinished, 18/- to 20/-. STORE CATTLE. There was a heavy yarding, consisting chiefly of yearlings and two-year-olds. Out of it there might have been for 100 to 120 good grass bullocks, which sold at late market rates. Two-year-olds were inclined to be a little easier. The sale opened not so well as the previous sale did, hut towards the end it livened up considerably, and prices were much the same as at the previous sale. The absence of good dairy cows was noticeable, but anything good sold at up to £l2. For springing heifers there was a good enquiry, but there were very few forward. Calves sold up to £1 5/- down to £1; yearling heifers, £2 10./- to £2 15/-; mixed yearlings, £3 to £3 5/-; three-yoar-old bullocks, £9 to £10; 2 % -year-olds, £7 10/- to £8 5/-; two-year-olds, £6 10/- to £7 5/-. STORE SHEEP. The yarding was bigger than usual, and prices were inclined to bo batter. There was a fair enquiry for all classes of good sheep, and a number of buyjrs were present to pick up good rape lambs, and good breeding ewes. Sales noted were: — National Mortgage and Agency 00., Ltd. STORE CATTLE. —Account D. McBeth, 20 steers at £8 5/-; account P. Joyce, 21 do. at £4 3/6; account T. O’Connor, 10 do. (passed); account K. The Waiwcra will loud about 7000 crates of cheese at Bluff this week, and the following week the Tongariro will take 5000 crates. The Zealandic is duo to arrive at Wellington on March 8, and it is hoped that she will be able, to take 10,000 crates from Bluff. Should the Zealandic load this quantity, it will place Bluff in n good position so far ns the shipment of cheese is concerned, because supplies will afterwards commence to case (iff. It is expected (hat the Otago shipments of cheese this year will be well up to the average, but there will be a big decrease in the exports of butter. A factor that has materially assisted in the production of the average quantity of cheese Is that the Taieri and Peninsula Company lias this year installed cheesemaking plants in most of its factories, and refrained from making butter. Notwithstanding the dry season experienced in North Otago, the manufacture of cheese has therefore been well maintained. As regards butter, practically the last exports for the season were taken by the Talnui, which sailed from New Zealand on February 14. STOCK EXCHANGE. (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, February 22. The following Stock Exchange, sale is ■ eported:—Union Steam Ship Co., ordin;27, i>. WELLINGTON, February 22. The following Stock Exchange sale is reported; Wellington Trust Loan, Ltd., £7 1/i.
