FIRES

BLAZE AT BLUFF. A fire occurred at Bluff shortly before 5 a.m. on Saturday, when a four-roomed cottage was-completely destroyed. The building was owned and occupied by Mr John Forrest, and was insured for £2OO in the Commercial Union Office, while the furniture was covered by a policy of £l3O in the same company. Nothing was saved, and the adjoining building had a narrow escape. FATAL FIRE AT WAIRIO. The destruction by fire of a small building at the rear of the Wairio Hotel on Friday night was attended with a fatal result. The hut was occupied by a single man named James Looney, bettween 10 and 50 years of age, who was employed as boots at the hotel. He attended a Roman Catholic mission at Nightcaps on Thursday night, returning about 0 or 10 p.m. The hut was burnt down during the night and human remains were discovered among the debris. As the occupant is missing it is evident that lie was burnt to death.
