DUNEDIN, February 19

Southland owners again did well at Wingatui, as Peerless, Golden Rupee, Rorke's Drift and Magdala all scored for well-known southern sportsmen, while Lord Frederick, Hardshot, Daringdule, Lady Trent, and Joan filled minor places. A great deal of the success of horses owned in the home province may bo put down to the fact that the current season has been the best from a tine weather point of view ever experienced in Southland since first-class tracks were provided for training purposes at Invercargill and Riverton, while the improvement in the class of the horses owned in southern parts also had something to do with the rich results of the three days of the Wingatui Autumn gathering.

All started in Owhiro Hurdle Handicap for which Moddite <D. McKay) was made a very hot favourite from Peerless (P. Willis). When the Held passed the stand Peerless was in command from Glenfern (who joined the leader a little further on), then ‘came* Lord Frederick and Castiron, while Moddite was already in the rear. Peerless was four lengths clear at the six furlong mark whore Bore made a faulty jump, and Moddite commenced to move up. Before the second last fence was reached Lord Frederick had singled out in pursuit of Peerless. The Peerage—Bouquet (Hotchkiss— Bridal Rose) gelding gave Willis an easy ride over the last fence, and ran home a winner by eight lengths from his stable companion. Lord Frederick, who beat Castiron for second money by half • length. Had the rider of Castiron not elected to make a run on the rails. Lord Frederick would probably have been beaten into third place. Moddite was fourth and Bore next. Glenfern displayed a very fair amount of pace, but did not fence too kindly.

Rumour was busy overnight with the names of Reval anil Robert Roll in connection with the Flying Handicap, hut the pair faced the starter all fifth t, and were backed first and second in order. However, it was a particularly pood wagering race there being money for at least eight nut of the ten starters. Reval and Fondrette (Lockett) wore first to show out, while Roller and .tlalvolia were slow to move. Charmilia joined Reval at the hill, hut Twelfth Knight "was closing on the pair at the turn, in the run home Twelfth Knight ( Roy Reid), and Reval (L. Wilson) drew away, and in a good finish the former won by half a length, -Malvolia was eight lengths away third, then came Robert Bell, Oxenhopo and Cbarmiila. The winner, who is a son of Menschikoff and Nantes, appeared to relish the firm going and galloped in a very resolute manner. Malvolia ran a fair race to get third place after being left.

In the Warrington Handicap Sister Regis was always favourite. but she never got to the front rankers in the battle. From a good start Baritone was first to show out from Rrooksdale, but Golden Rupee immediately ran into second place, with Kiltess tailing the field. Golden Rupee was in command turning into the straight, with Rrooksdale handy. In the race to the judge Golden Rupee, by General Average— Silver Rupee (.T. Olsen) held his own, and won comfortably by about a length from Hardshot (C. Kmcison), with Kiltess third two lengths away. Prior to the start Kiltess teas knocked over by several of the other horses running back from the barrier, but horse and rider

escaped unhurt. Fiery Cross was fourth just heading F.rooksdalo. Mardshot, who ran very consistently during tiie meeting. was very unlucky to find Golden Kopec, who was never dangerous in tlio Berwick Handicap on the opening day. in such rare galloping luimour. as the race was run at a very fast clip.

The excellent field of a dozen contested the Dunedin Jockey Cluh Handicap, of Jo,! sovs., and there was spirited wagering. the majority of the starters tlndin.it support. Korke's Drift (C. Emerson) was always favourite, while Ardenvhor finally finished second in order of selection. Marc Antony was a strong tip from Kiccarton which brought him out in third place, while Fender's prominent running on tile preceding daVs of the lixturo accounted for her position. Snub was known to l;mp trained off hence his position in the betting. Palisade always had a select following. Down pot off on tile move, while Palisade and Ardenvhor were also on their lofts in a Rood start, in which Snub pot knocked hack and Kongahero was slow to mot e. Ktinning out of the straight Palisade was in command from Ardenvhor, Down, Korkc’s Drift and Ogier. As the Held ran along the hack Koike's Drift moved into second place, while Kingtorm was heading the others. The field (dosed up racing to the straight, Fender being one of the prominent contestants. In the straight Korke's Drift ran strongly on the rails and in a slogging finish beat Palisade home by a neck, with Fender almost a length and a-lialf away. 31 arch Antony was fourth, Kingform fifth, and then came Ogier and Kongahere. The connections of Korke's Drift supported their representative confidently and he, put up a very fine effort, covering the ten furlongs in 2.8 "-5, only 2-5 sec. outside the track record, held by First Glance with 0.3 in the saddle. Thus, in the three leading races at the fixture, Korke's Drift won two, and another Southlandcr Magda la, .accounted for the third. Prior to the third day the Messrs Price are reported to have refused 1250 guineas for the son of Calibre and O'Korke's Fancy. Palisade (A. McKay), I who was carrying -1 lbs overweight, or 7.1,2, ran a good race, and, for the second time in his career when started in a stayer's event, was unlucky enough to run up against Korke's Drift, as trainer P. T. Hogan's charge also beat him in the Wyndham Gup decided over a mile and a-(|iiarter on New year's Day. Little Pender put up a fine showing, after getting anything but a good passage over the first mile. Any chance, that Snub might have had was extinguished when he got knocked back at the start, and Marc Antony was hemmed in over the greater portion of the trip. Down did not stay too well, and Meltichikoff ran a very disappointing race.

When the Hopeful Handicap came up lor decision Sir G. Clifford's Don Pacifico, by San Francisco —Wind whistle, was made tiie medium of a plunge on the part of speculators. Kilkee was first to jump out from a good start, but The White King and Partisan (Glenapp—Kris) singled out. and raced three lengths clear of their opponents ui> the rise. The favourite and Kilkee closed on the leaders at the home turn, but when the straight was entered Partisan and Don Pacifico drew away. In a spirited finish Don Pacifico defeated the speedy Partisan by a short head, with Kilkee three lengths away.

Tiie Christchurch mare, Martuk, by Martian—Ukraine, who has cost Canterbury backers a large amount of money of late, was heavily backed for the Abbotsford Welter Handicap, but she had to strike her colours to Palisadb, despite the fact that the Pallas horse had put ,up a big fight in the principal race of the day, and only the Hopeful Stakes event intervened from his former effort. To race close to a track record over one mile ttnd a-quarter, and come out with only a race between to win a mile shows that Palisade is a very stout equine proposition. The victory of Mr L. C. Hazlctt's horse was well received, as the Dunedin sportsman has boon rather unlucky with the Tapanui-brcd stallion for a long time past. The winner did not appear to be in the least distressed on finishing up his task. Martuk ran a very fair race, but Daringdale was going just as well, if not better, that she was at the finish.
