QUARTERLY AIEETING. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce met last evening, there being present. Messrs F. St. J. Loughnan (president). J. T. F. Alitehell. Jas. Callender, John AlcQueen. S. AlcDunald, AV. A. Cox, W. S. Fleming, H. W. Boyds, and J. 11. Reed. Apologies for non-attcaulaneu were received from Alessrs 1.. W. Spencer, C. Jones, A. le Hoyles, and J. T. Carswell. CORRESPONDENCE. ) The Alclbourno Chamber of Conmerce acknowledged receipt of six grade samples of oats. —Received. The Osaka (Japan) Chamber of Commerce forwarded a catalogue of goods. — Received. Lloyds Invercargill Agency forwarded Information desired by Lloyds at London. Received, and information to be forwarded to Lloyds. The Association of the N. X. Chambers Of Commerce enclosed copies of the rules Of the Association. — Received. The Association of the N. Z. Chambers of Commerce wrote advising tho charge for the booklet issuer! by the Government Printing Office dealing with war legislation turd enemy contraats. — Received. The Association of N. X. Chambers of Commerce wrote stating: ’’With reference to your letter of January Jl on the subject of f.o.b. contracts for grain and produce, the idea of the executive was not that it should draft a clause, but that a conference of the grain interests concerned should be hold, and if they drafted a clause the executive would be pleased to recommend its universal acceptance.”—To be remitted to tto Grain Brokers' Association for them to draft a clause that would prove satisfactory. The British Imperial Council of Commerce wrote in regard to the ninth Congress, of the Chambers of Commerce of the Empire.' which would probably be held at Toronto during next year. Received. OTHER BUSINESS. The following new members waerc elected; —Alessrs S. Ritchie, F. Ritchie, and L. W. Spencer.’ The president was authorised! to sign cheques. Several accounts were passed”for payment. The rules of the -Associated Chambers Of Commerce wore approved off. QUARTERLY REPORT! Since the annual meeting in December at which no formal business was transacted, only one regular meeting?has been held, viz., on 21st January, and the minutes as read give details of the>ibusiness that transpired. Since this meeting, two special meetings have been held, viz., that of the sub-committee appointed to revise scale of mercantile charges and a rejecting of the full committee to consider the recommendations of the sub-cJrarrrittee, and the rules of the association of the N. Z. Chambers of Commerce, and tli* minutes of the executive meeting of the Association. The rules of the- Association arc now before this meeting for discussion, and the scale of mercantile charges, together with the annual report, are now in the hands of th»e printer and will be issued early next week.

The Town Engineer has been interTiewed regarding the proposed accommodation at the new wharf sheds, and has promised to notify this Chamber when work is more forward, so-that any suggested alterations may be considered before the work is actually competed. Various communications have* been received from time to time regarcJLng prospects of future business witli Japan, Jtussia, etc., all of which require; earnest consideration with a view to the opening up of new avenues of trade as soon as Iho war closes.

There are other matters of interest to this town and district that coeild, with advantage, be taken into consideration by this Chamber, and when sutfloorted biilie united business strength of Invercargill prove efficacious in obtaining what may bo deemed to be to the advancement of Southland.

"With the object of attaininglthis end, an attempt is being made to hold the quarterly meetings in the evenings so that time may be given to the proper discussion of subjects of interesti and for the benefit of the town and district, and it is hoped and expected that members will be led to take an active part in the deliberation of the Chamber.

It is necessary to-remind sntno members that their Chamber lias been instituted for the assistance and protection of the business interests of Invercargill, and the Council invites members to interest themselves in the Chambers’ deliberations and particularly to bring before this Chamber any matters ---which require public-attention directed to them. The Council would further point out that with the active interest of'the members. the Chamber will act with the full commercial strength of Invercargill, and results attained will doubtless bo adequate. The report was adopted.
