Although only a new sh ip the F. and S. liner Devon, which was to leave Sydney on Saturday for New Zealand to load for Home, has already completed quite a chapter of romance. Before the outbreak of war the older.for the construction of the Devon was placed with a French firm at Dunkirk. The keel was laid, and good progress had been made with the construction when war between Germany and France was declared. Then, of course, owing to military demands in France, men were called to the colours with the result that work at the Devon had to he suspended for a time. By getting into touch with the Government, however, the shipbuilders got the work continued, and by the end of October, 1911, the vessel was well on the road to completion. Then came the fear that the Germans might succeed in breaking through to Cab)is, and rather than have the Devon seized by the foe, arrangements were made for her to he launched in her incomplete state, and taken to England to he finished. She was successfully launched in readiness to cross the Channel. While the Devon was at Dun- [ kirk the place was shelled from Dixiiuulo, 33 miles away. Fortunately the J if-von escaped damage. The vessel was taken safely to London, and although the drawings and everything connected with the construction were in French, the British shipbuilders took over tin- work where it had been left off, and completed the Job. The Devon, which is of 9G ; il gloss tonnage, is commanded by Cant-U.i Robertson. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 13. Sailed—Kss“X and Odland, for Auckland. THE SEND RITA.
