VALUE OF VICTORIA CROSS
ONLY 13S AWARDED IN WAR, Among ten Victoria Cross heroes recently decorated by the King at Buckingham Palace was Captain Tubb, who earned his decoration in the Lone Pine trenches in Gallipoli on August 9. Lieutenant Tubb, as lie was at the time, twice rebuilt a barricade with the greatest coolness, and finally succeeded in maintaining his position under heavy bomb fire. Captain Tubb said that the King, after shaking hands, remarked; ”1 have over two million men fighting in the navy and army, and only 138 Victoria Crosses have been awarded. I tell you that for you to appreciate how rare this great distinction is among my brave men.” Captain Tubb added: "I know what the King meant about the honour and rarity of the V.C., because I reckon at least 50 of my boys earned one.
