SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED,

Owners' are reminded that further payments and acceptances, together with entries for the Apprentices' Plate, in connection with the first day of the D.J.C. Autumn meeting are due to-mor-row (Friday) evening.

Quite a number of owners whose horses finished second and third during the. Concluding day’s racing at Forbnry Park (says the N.Z. Trotting Journal) are wishing they had never seen Dunedin.

it is states that the connections of the Auckland pacing colt Waverley, by Galindo—Thelma, are thinking of sending him to Victoria to compete in the £IOOO Derby given by the Melbourne Trotting Club. The race will bo decided on Friday, March 10.

Notwithstanding rumours to the contrary, the New Brighton T.C. have decided to include the popular Derby Stakes in the programme for their Autumn meeting to be held on March IS and 20. The stakes will be 250 sovs and the conditions will he the same as in the previous classic event. .

In the event of AY. Robinson not being available to ride Rorke’s Drift in the j Dunedin Cun, the mount may be given.' to J. ’Wallis.

It is reported from Winton that Mr F. Moore’s Pallas —Order, two-year-old got into a wire fence the other day, but it Is not anticipated that the youngster's Injuries will prove serious.

Not many classic events decided on the New Zealand turf (writes "Phaeton” in N.Z. Herald) have fallen to Australianbred horses, but at the Egmont meeting last week one of the number secured marked distinction in events of that character run on successive days. The horse to earn distinction was Bimeter, who won the Egmont Stakes (six furlongs) and Hawera Stakes (one mile). The opopsition which Bimeter encountered could not be termed powerful: but in worsting his stable mate, the wellperformed Emperador, Bimeter can at least take credit on that score. Bimeter, who was got by the Bell of Portland horse, Malster from the Lochiel mare Comely, was bought as a yearling at Randwick by Mr G. D. Greenwood for 550 guineas, and as the Australianbred colt won £1125 in stakes last season. and has a better total already this season, the Canterbury sportsman has good reason to rejoice over his purchase, of the black son of Malster.

It is hardly likely that the owner of Mohawk will pay up for the Americanbred colt for the Berwick Handicap, on the opening day of the' D.J.O. Autumn meeting, as he has been asked to give away weight to quite a number of horses having distinctly better performances to their credit. The son of Mexican lias only won one race in four starts and when successful was in receipt of weight from the majority of a field which could not be classed as strong, yet he is asked to concede poundage to Brooksdale, Deltonio, Firey Cross, and, at the same time, meet on equal terms Glensponse. who has performed very' consistently this season. 'When Mohawk won the New Year Handicap (six furlongs) on the first day of the lecent S.R-C.’s Summer meeting he was in receipt of 20 lbs from Hardshot and now he is asked to-meet the son of Calibre on equal terms, although he has not faced the starter since them: He was also getting 161bs from Kokowai, who ran him to half a length at the finish, and this does not look like form entitling him to give away weight to horses/with ■very fair credentials. BOWLIN’S. SOUTHLAND v. BLUFF. The four-rink championship and inter:lub match was played on the Bluff ?reen yesterday. Following are the results:— S. B. C. C. Cook. C. Iggo, W.
