Tlie Sydney Shipping List confirms the announcement made by tbc New Zealand Shipping Company early last month that the steamer Calliope has been chartered to load wool and general cargo in New Zealand for London. On January 7 the New Zealand Shipping Company advised that the Calliope was due to commence loading at Auckland on ’.March 15, and would sail Homewards in March. The vessel left New' York on November 26 for Queensland ports. .Messrs G. H. Seales (Ltd.) report that tlie Barber liner Uganda, which left New York on January 6 for Australia and New Zealand will definitely go to YVcllington to discharge. As the ports of call and their order arc not announced, the probable date of the vessel's arrival at Wellington can only be conjectured, but she may be expected there about March IT.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., local agents fur the U.S. and A. Line, have been advised that their steamer Canastota, which had been fixed to load at .New ■York for New Zealand ports last month, will not make the journey. News has been received that another addition to the Federal and Shire lleet had begun her maiden voyage. Those who really knew the merchant service sailor are not surprised at the way in which he has ignored the perils arising from German submarines and mines (says the London Shipping Gazette,). As a matter of fact the reduction in the supply of sailors due to tins danger has been infinitesimal —at Lie most, onl;.' .or H per eent. Nor lias (here been a hr-.lling-off in the number of boys pressing themselves as apprentices. Tine, at all events, is the experience of tin. -shipping Federation. Any number of !ikt#jr boys come forward, but, ou in" to then; being lower ships availaide, uot so yauny youngsters can be indentured s to the attitude <;£ seamen, tiie instam • is cited of a man who ships away th I'-w./m the federatio.-i office, and who ha.** '.eeii ou three ships which were torpedoed. Me is still at sea. in the present state of affairs it can well be appreciated that shipowners arc not anxious to soc their supply ot men depleted by tlie enlisting of seamen for service in the Army (says tin? London shipping amt Mercantile Gazette). -Vs foe matter stands seamen need not e;ili. t. Hut that is not sufficient, for there in notiiing to prevent a sailor joining the army if he be so minded. Speaking on this point leceutly. one closely associated with the supplying of seamen said: "The notice issued conjointly by Mr Walter Kum'iinan and Lord Lerby does not go far enough, because it does jn'l oreveiit the recruiting sergeant accepting a seaman. Kvery seaman who has enlisted in the Army has gone volmitarilv. Thousands of sailors and tin.men Jiaie joined. 1 know of instances where practically whole crews have enlisted. If there are unv seamen still left who want to go. Hi is notice will not prevent them. Tiie recruiting sergeants must tie told that thev must not accept seamen. I,ven then if a sailor describes himself as of some other occupation, I don't see. how ‘von can stop Him enlisting. There have been eases of apprentices, IT years old, runuin- aw.n' and Joining, tmt these have been got back. Certainly it is much hotter for them to be ou boatd ship than in tiie Army." EXPECTED AT BLUFF.
