SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODEED,

The Taranaki J. C.’s autumn meeting will open to-day and continue over Thursday.

The following well-known South land racing professionals will leave to-mor-row (Thursday) morning to join the Mounted Rifles section of the RJtli Reinforcements at Trentham.—Trainer: M. Murray; jockeys: T. B. Taylor, M. A. Pankhurst. F. H. Eli!!. T. H. Pemberton, T. P. Milne. The five horsemen mentioned are all particularly smart lads, and their departure will leave a gap in Riverton racing circles which will be hard to fill.

There were no fewer than six double •winners at the Egmont meeting last week. This must nearly constitute a record.

At Takapuna meeting last week two Jockeys were each fined £lO. Thompson, rider of Bogey, was penalised for interfering with Denise Orme, and a like sum ntas imposed on H. Robinson, rider Oi rAng Lupin, for interfering with Lady Penuary.

The Government tax in connection with the recent M’ellington K.G.’s Summer meeting, held on January 2U, 22, and 24, amounted to £6140 2s lOcl.

Nightwatcb, who won the Craven Plate at Riccarton on Saturday last, was. making his. first public appearance for the season. * He ran only once last season. being unplaced in the Great Easter Handicap, and once in the previous season, when he was second to Sauci in the Middle Park Plate. His last win prior to Saturday, was in the Canterbury Champagne Stakes, in the autumn of 1913. Since then he has caused a great deal of trouble through unsoundness, having frequently gone amiss just as his prospects of winning a race looked bright.

Florist, winner of the hurdle race on each .day of the Egmont meeting, was purchased by her present owner for about £2O. She lias been successful four times since Boxing Day. her earnings in stakes being nearly £4OO, so that Bile has been a decided bargain.

Although that good pacer, Admiral Wood, has been nominated for two events at the meeting to be hold at Addington on Saturday next, it is doubtful if he will be forward enough to race. Since the New Zealand Cup meeting in November last the son of Wildwood Jun. has been having a spell, and has only recently been put into work again.

Amongst the nominations for the Manawatu Trotting Club's meeting next week is Ardath, a smart three-year-old £olt by Galindo Marie Corelli, who was sold last month by Mr M'. Kerr to a North Island sportsman.

On Friday, Feb. 19th, the intervening day of the Dunedin Cup meeting at Dunedin, Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., will sell on behalf of Sir George McLean, the Warrington Stud yearlings. The youngsters are by the imported St. Simon stallion Sarto, as follows: Bay colt from Tourmaline, bay colt from Venetia, bay gelding from Ventafera, bay gelding from Afer, bay filly from Similette, bay filly from Ventosa, bay filly from Chinook, bay gelding from Rubelite, and brown colt from Noblesse. For some seasons past the yearlings from Warrington have been disposed of in Sydney to the loss of New Zealand racing stables, as quite a number of the Sarto horses of mature age meanwhile gained turf distinction in Maoriland, viz., John Barleycorn, Startorze, Audria etc, The stock of St. Simon’s son have shown a decided partiality towards the jumping game of late years, and this fact alone should increase the value of the present crop of young thoroughbreds. The Invercargill - owned pacer. Cathedral Chimes, who has raced very consistently this season, is reported to be enjoying a spell. It is understood that Mr W. Quirk, of Timaru, is going to send his smart three-year-old colt Watchman, by Lord Chancellor —Curfew Bell, to race at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting. Watchman, who is a perfect - actioned pacer, promises to blossom into a high-class horse in the near future. It is quite on the cards that he will be opposed to Cello Sydney Wilkes, Author Dillon, Tamarisk, and Rorke's Drift in the New Brighton Trotting Derby. One mile. For gentleman riders only. Minimum weight, 10 stone. The Clifden Club arc still to race under their old cognomen of the “Ciifden Hack Racing Club," us the authorities did not respond to the request made to change the name, by dropping the word “Hack.” The Club were, however, granted permission to race on Wednesday, 15th March, instead of Friday, 17th March, tile former being the more suitable date of the two. The colours adopted by the stewards arc green and white the former in honour of Quid Ireland’s patron saint. Saint Patrick, and the latter for "purity of sport."

Mr J. Griffin, who lias relinquished possession of the Nightcaps Hotel, anti has taken up his residence at Invercargill' meanwhile, informs me that he intends to race his All Red —Dossie filly, -Miss Rod, at Clifden, if all goes well with her preparation. Mr Griffin has owned this well-bred animal from birth, and has exercised much patience in allowing her to reach maturity before calling on her to race. She is now a four-year-old. "Charlie” Church has her up at the Wairaki at. present. Nominations for the Clifden races close on 25th February. Handicaps (to be framed by Mr A. Jones, of Minton) will appear on 29th February, and acceptances will close on 6th March. His many friends will be pleased to hear that Mr W. Ledingham is again able to get about. His injuries turned out to be not so severe as at first slated and after treatment in the Riverton Hospital for a little over a week he has returned to his home and is hopeful of being able to race and ride his steeplechase mare, Lavena, at Clifden. Mr IV. Keith is working Chelsea Park at Otautau for Clifden. The North Islander ran well for a mile in the hurdles at Otautau, considering his condition, as he was quite green, and lie should be well by tlie middle of March. He has also Comedy Queen in work for the same meeting. This mare, by the defunct Comedian, out of a brood mare named For-got-me-Not (of uncertain breeding) ran surprisingly well at Otautau in the Cup and should bo well worth training. Charlie Church is working Te Tua for Mr Keith, up at Wairaki, but the grey is getting on in years and in all probability will never earn a winning bracket for his new owner. He never seems to have iccovcred from the shock of wining over the Riverton country once. Mr Jas. Ritchie, of Nightcaps, has put Bonnally (Sarto —Dinna Forget) and Fanfaroaa (by Black ami Red) into work again, and this striking pair of racehorses are being ridden to work on tins Wnirio course by a younger member of the Ellis family of horsemen. The Wairio course "’as recently thrown open to trainers.

Groat interest is being taken in the appeals in connection with the Wairio Steeplechase, to be heard at Dunedin on Thursday: interest being heightened by the fact that a solicitor was engaged by one of the interested parties to work on liis behalf. Popular opinion seems to favour tite chance of St. Pedro and Layma getting first and second money, in which case there will be no claimant for third. ft is staled that one of the horsemen who gave evidence before the stewards after the nice was run, has -one back on his statement then made, as he was "muddled" at the time. The race in question was undoubtedly decided in a hurry. The order of finishing was: Captain French, Case-hot, Pakaukura, St. Pedro. Lavcna. After a meeting of the Judicial Stewards. Captain French and Pakaukura were distanced, and the race awarded to Caseshot, with St. Pedro in second place and La\ona next. Hie owner of Captain French appeals against the stake going to Caseshot. The owner of St. Pedro appeals against either of the other pair being awarded the stake as again-t the claims of his horse, if lie succeeds the fourth and fifth horses to pass the post get the stakes. In view of the fact that the case comes on next Thursday, it would not be fair to discuss the'pros and cons. However, once upon a time the bar-maids and barmen in Perth got up a picnic and sports meetin~ The big event decided thereat was a "menagerie race, which fot the benefit of the uni Dated means that a competitor uonld ride, drive, push nr pull any manner of two or four-logged beast or “bird of nrev." A publican who rode an emu was first past the post. When Hie pistol went off at the start the emu received a dickens of a fright and bolted, but just as he passed the post Ins rider foil off, and when ho recovered his wind maile for the stewards to collect hi.s prize, no doubt having an eye meanwhile on the black-board for the div on the ■•bird.” Ho was informed, however, that he had been distanced as ho had •■ridden a fowl." The stake went to a boy who drove a pair of goats.
