Ldgar (exMinister for Public Works and Health, Victoria). Dr McXab arrived at Gore on Saturday afternoon via Queenstown and spent the week-end at Knapdale. He returned North by yesterday morning’s train. Sergeant William Hamilton, who recently returned from Gallipoli, was on Saturday evening, in the Protestant Hall, tendered a welcome social by the railway workshops staff, close on seventy being present. A pleasant few hours were occupied with speeches and musical items, and Sergeant Hamilton, who left with the main body as a private, was congratulated on his promotion, and on having played a part in the operations in Gallipoli , that had won renown for the New Zealanders. Tlio death is announced of Miss Grace E. Faton, A.T.C.L., L.A.8., a young lady well-known in Invercargill musical circles at the early age of 22 years. When a pupil at the High School, Miss Baton won a scholarship and later pursued her musical studies with marked success, winning high honours at the Trinity College and Associated Board examinations. Both she and her pupils wore also successful participants in the Invercargill Competitions. Two years ago jjier health began to fail, and, despite the best medical skill and careful nursing, she gradually became weaker until she peacefully passed away on Sunday afternoon. Her willing services were always available at local functions and last year, with characteristic courage, she assisted at several patriotic entertainments in town and country, besides composing the music of a patriotic song that was successfully sung at concerts in aid of the war funds. The cutting' short of so promising a career is especially sail and sincere sympathy will be felt for the widowed mother in her bereavement. At Armadale, Ad el bourne, recently there passed away one of the builders of Invercargill in the person of Mr Frederick. William Burweil. F.R.1.8.A., formerly well-known as an architect hero. Mr Burweil carried ni an extensive practice in Invercargill in the ’7o’s and ’SO’s. Among other buildings which he has left as monuments may be mentioned the promises of the N.Z. Loan and M.A. Go., and Messrs Wright, .Stephenson and Co., Orescent, the National, Union and Colonial Banks, the Rank of New Zealand, the whole block in Dee street between Hsk and Don streets, that is from Messrs Hnllenstoin Bros' to Air Brown's, the Club Hotel, the A.AI.P. Buildings, and Briscoe's Buildings, corner of Dee and Spey streets. The late Mr Burweil was also the architect for the Garrison Hall, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, the Wesleyan Church and many other buildings. His hold and free style of treating his buildings materially helped to impart to Invercargill the distinction of being one of the best built towns of its size in New Zealand. Air Harwell was a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, and practised his profession in West Australia as well as in Invercargill. While here he was an enthusiastic volunteer, and was one of tlie moving spirits of the Southland Hussars. As Alajor in that body lie contributed greatly to bring that Corps to a high state of proficiency.
