THE TURF

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. |

Acceptances far all handicaps and entries for the Maiden Plate at the Wairio J. C. meeting on Wednesday next close this (Saturday) evening. The Wellington R.C.’s Summer meeting will ho carried out on Thursday and Saturday of next week and the Monday following.

On Friday next nominations for tha princfpa! events of the Dunedin J. C. a Autumn meeting fall due. It is expected that a number of Southland-owned horses will be entered for the leading

The well-known trotting owner, Mr T. The wel-known trotting ower, Mr T. O'Connor, lias had the misfortune bo lose a very nice colt foal by reason of the youngster falling in an attempt to negotiate a wire fence, with the result that his neck was broken. Considerable inti rest was taken in the foal as he was one of the first of the progeny of Brookbcii (Holman —Hrookwate) Irom Theresa \V. It is surmised that the foal was excited lo a reckless mood by his halfsister, a filly by Petereta. gadoping about the paddock.'

In trie race for the Tapanaui Handicap on Wednesday last old Teodor stopped in an unaccountable manner after passing the six furlong post and came on again at the finish. His connections were greatly disappointed with liis performance until it was subsequently discovered Dial be had spread more than one of his plates. On the second day of the meeting lito son of Lord Ros.'yn and Plevna ea-ily accounted for his rival.'; of the opening day, when soundly shod. The Old fellow, who is looking well at present, was in receipt of 331bs from Reflow a. when he turned the tables on her in the Stewards' Handicap on Thursday. The Wairio J. handicapper has been very severe on the Wallace L pacer Wailacetown in the Nightcaps Trot, class 4.0 tone mile and a-lialf) on Wednesday next. He is only in receipt of 4secs from his stable companion Seaward Spot, who won the Christmas Handicap (one mile and ahalf) at the Gore T. C. meeting in 3.43 l-ssecs, whereas Wallacetown's best performance to date was third place in the Novice Handicap, decided over a similar distance at Gore, when he finished third, badly beaten, forty or fifty yards behind Armature (3.43 3-5) and Raeburn (3.44), both of phom he w-aa meeting on equal terms. Seaward Spot won her race at Gore striding away 60 yards in advance of Armature (3.40). A meeting of the Hawke's Bay J. C. was held on Friday last. With reference to the Croesus disqualification, it was resolved as follows: "That the finding of the Hawke's Bay J. C. judicial Committee in disqualifying H. Lorigan (rider of Croesus) be confirmed, and that the appeal of Messrs G. F. Hardy (owner), J. S. O'Neill (trainer), and H. Griffith (rider of Ptrrsefinder) be heard at a special meeting of the District Committee to be held on January 14.” The American - bred colt, Mohawk, has been on the easy list since the Southland K.C. fixture, but it id thought that lie is recovering from the soreness which troubled him at Wyndham and Invercargill.

Jockey J. Olsen accounted for six races at the Tapamri R. C. fixture, a record which will bring him up to the firing line in connection with the Maorilaad jockeys’ premiership list. Wyndham R. C. meeting on New Tear's Day, produced £55- Os 4d in State and War taxes. The usual per cent on totalisator receipts for the gathering yielded £290 17s lOd for the Government coffers, togethers with a farther £lO being a 1 per cAit tax on the total stakes of. £IOOO. These figures will give an idea of the heavy taxation demands being made on largo and small racing fixtures throughout the colony at the present time when arm-chair critics arc crying out for the curtailment of racing. During the past fortnight, too, the editors of several northern papers have been commenting on the return showing that £850,000 was passed through the totalisator during the holiday season, quite overlooking the fact that these figures are built np by the same money, in most instances, passing through the investing window again „ and again. During a lengthy experience of the turf the writer has never yet found a critic of racing honest enough to admit that totalisator returns are built up by money wagered over and over again, perhaps to the extent of eight times, during one afternoon's sport. The aged chestnut mare. Vital Spark, who returned a very substantial dividend by winning the Kelso Hack Handicap on the first day of the Tapanui R. C. meeting, was sired by Legion (son of St. Lc-ger) from Sylvia. by Silvermark— Dnntroon mare. She is on the small side, and may never earn further distinction on the racecourse, but her gametes* may lead to her producing stout stock. Trainer Thistleton left the mare behind with her owner when he return from Tapanui. Three of the winner:-: at Tapanui, viz.. Redown, Brooksdale. and Kokowal, were bred in the paddocks adjoining the racecourse by Dr W. Robertson, who has produced some very successful horses at his select stud, such as Palisade, Red Charm. Redshire, etc. Teddy Bear ran very disappointingly at Tapanui -after hi= first display in the Maiden Plate. It is just possible that he strained himself slightly in his hard contest with Garetta in the race referred to. Daringdale's sister. Agreement, had a very easy task in her only race at Tapanui! when she won the Summer Welter Handicap from Olga Kolmar. The dividend was one of the smallest ever paid out in Southland, and there was no racing merit in the victory. Agreement, by tiie way. has been greatly over-rated by local handienppors during the past and pi rc-toiU but she may improve with nsre. There is just a suspicion in the minds of close observes that she has been weighted on the reputation and skill of her trainer. There is reason to believe that the imported American mare Kager Eyes, by ('os;-, rum .Susie Bush.) has proved iB for.] to the imported English horse Solferino. This will be very pleasing to Mr Russell, as Solfrrino’s youngsters have already demonstrated in the Home Country that they possess the gift of galloping f.T-t. * A chestnut gelding called. The Erin, who was raced at Tapanui on Wednesday la'-'t. L said to he a full brother to the steep’eehaser Silver Blaze, a horse well-known at Riccartnn. and with whom trainer P. T. Hogan won several races between the flags. The Erin is possessed of substance and tan muster up some pace, hut will have to gallop faster than ho did at Tapanui to have a chance of winning in good company. In the Birch wood Trot Handicap list, in connection with the Wairio J. C. meeting. Indian Girl Usees, should read Indian Wolf losecs. FORBUET PARK TROTTING CIiUB. cnRISTCHT'RCn, January IS.
