A London cable states that Mr Churchill has left London to join th* Oxfordsl lire Hussars in France. Hr Hendry, formerly House Surgeon at the Invercargill Hospital, has been apopinted to take charge of the Hanmer Convalescent Home for returned soldiers, and will leave on Monday to take up his new duties.
Mrs David-Stewart, of Centre street, Invercargill, yesterday received a cable from London, stating that her son Private A. B. Stewart, who was severely wounded during the lighting in August at Gallipoli, was "improving wonderfully.”
Word has been received that Mr "Archie” C. Macdonald, late of Messrs Nichol Bros., Christchurch, and formerly of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Invercargill, lias received a commission at Gallipoli. Lieutenant Macdonald enlisted as a gunner with the Canterbury section of the artillery, leaving with the 2nd Reinforcements, and has gradually worked his way to the front. He is well-known in sports circles, at one time being a prominent member of the Invercargill Football Club, and he has represented Southland, Canterbury and the South Island.
News of the death of Trooper Alan De Castro is contained in a letter written from the trendies by Private Ivan Stafford to his mother in Nelson. The letter says;—“ Alan De Castro was the pet of the whole regiment, the boys are verycut up over his death. The Lieutenant of the troop to which Trooper De Castro belonged has also written, expressing his deep regret at losing a comrade so bright anil cheerful and so keen on his work. Trooper De Castro was killed while making an attack with a machine gun during the big attack in August. He had come through the first two days safely, and it was on the third day that he was shot. The Lieutenant speaks of the arduous time they had experienced during these three days, having had no sleep, and suffering greatly from th© shortage of water.
