CARNIVAL QUEEN ELECTION.
To the Editor. Sir. —I noticed an article in this morning’s issue of the Southland Times in connection with the Lakes Carnival Queen, to the effect that arrangements had been made to open up a produce stall in the Post Office square. Now, I think this action is going a step too far, and is certainly very unfair and detrimental to the retail producers of Invercargill, who have to make a living out of this business. During the period of this present war, the retail producers of Invercargill have suffered considerably, and, no doubt, more than any other line of business. They have also endeavoured to support this Carnival Queen election to their utmost, and now a section of the. supporters are going to cripple the retail producers, by opening up a produce stall, where they will probably be standing rent free, and will be able to sell their produce for less than the retailers can buy the goods, as they will be gifts. As a citizen and produce retailer of Invercargill. also a strong supporter of the Carnival Queen, I ask that the members of the Invercargill Town Council, should take steps to prevent the opening up of a produce stall in the Post Office square, which will cripple the trade of the retailers of this town, whose living depends entirelv unon this business. —T am. etc., FAIR PLAY. July 27.
