SOUTHLAND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Southland Horticultural Society was held on Friday evening. Tiie president (Mr L. Lennie) was in the chair and about a dozen members were present. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Three shows wore held during tlie year—the daffodil show, on tiie Ist and 2nd October, 10X4, in the Victoria Hall; the rose show on the Sth and 9th December, in the new hall on tlie A. and P. show grounds, and the autumn show on tlie 3rd and 4th March, in tlie Victoria Hall. Tlie balance sheet showed receipts from all sources to amount to XlO7 11s lid, including £9 Os 9d. tlie balance from last year. Disbursements were £99 19s, balance in bank £7 12s lid. unpaid subscriptions due £S 2s 6d, unpaid accounts £ll. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, .Mr L. Lennie: lion, vice-presidents, the Mayor (Mr D. McFarlane), .Sir J, G. Ward, and Messrs W. D. Hunt, R. A. Anderson, \V. B. Scandrelt, J. E. Matson; vice-presidents. Messrs G. Featherstone, J. H. Kingsland, IV. F. Scandrett, C. C. Sproull and W. N. Stirling; committee. Mesdames Cochrane, W. Fleming, C. S. Longuet and T. Hide, Messrs A. Bain, C. S. Longuet, A. Stock. N. Porter, J. F. McCulloch, J. Boyles, and the Rev. Ryburn: auditor, Mr XV. B. Scandrett; secretary, Mr R. B. McKay. Considerable discussion took place re tlie lack of interest shown by the public in tlie Society's shows. Eventually a notice of motion was given by Mr XV. F. Scandrett to be considered at a special general meeting of members toybe convened by circular and notice in local papers, viz. : "That in view of the lack of support extended by members and public to tlie Society no shows be held during tlie coming year.” Votes of thanks were passed to tlie auditor (Mr W. B. Scandrett), in the honorary judges, lady assistants and to the press.
