EIGHTH REINFORCEMENTS. 440 MEN FROM OTAGO. LEAVE FOR TRENTHAM AUGUST 18. The Dunedin Defence Office has been advised by headquarters at Wellington that the Otago military district will supply a quota of 440 men for the Eighth Reinforcements. The last progress returns for this district disclosed the fact that over SOO men were available, so that under the new percentage system a little more than half of the available men are being absorbed. The others will presumably get their chance later on with the reinforcements for the Trentham Regiment. The biggest numbers to be supplied are as follow: Mounted Rifles .. .. IGS Infantry 194 Artillery 6:1 In accordance with instructions issued by the Dunedin Defence Office, the four groups in the Otago district will supply the following numbers: —
Other numbers to be supplied arc:— Dunedin, Veterinary, 1; Oamaru, Signal Corps 2, Ambulance 1: Milton, Ambulance 1. In addition to the above two Ambulance men are urgently required to report at Palmerston North. They will go forward at the earliest possible date. Five Engineers and five Army Service Corps men are also required for the quota, but until the trades of the men in the respective branches are notified to the authorities the allocations for the groups will not be made. As regards the artillery for the reinit lias to be distinctly understood that 40 per cent, of the men required must he drivers. The complete Otago quota will report ill Trentham camp on August 19, so that they will leave Dunedin on Wednesday. August 18.
