The local branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company has been advised that the Rernuera, en route from London, via Hobart, is expected to reach Wellington to-day. According to present arrangements the Manapouri will leave Port Chalmers today for Yokohama and Kobe, and if sufficient inducement offers she will call at Wellington to load outward cargo. The New Zealand Shipping Company has been advised that the steamer Tongariro, en route from St. John to Wellington, was expected to leave Sydney, in continuation of her journey to Auckland, on June 20. She should arrive at the last-mentioned port on June 28, and at Wellington about July 2. It is becoming generally recognised that shipowners are in for a prolonged period of prosperity, even after the termination of the war, and a number of capitalists have been quietly buying the shares of cargo boat companies (says “Fairpluy” in its issue of April 22). Notwithstanding the advance in price which has taken place recently, there are a large number of shipping shares, which, based on present values of shipping property and the outlook, appear to be very cheap.
