THE IMPROVEMENT OF TWEED STREET.

To trio Editor. Sir,—X notice from the last report presented to the Invercargill Borough Council by the Public Works Committee that the matter of improvement to Tweed street is under consideration, and as money is likely to be spent upon it. the time appears opportune to bring under the notice of the Council and Beautifying Society a scheme whic hwas discussed by several Tweed street residents some time ago, but action in the matter was deferred owing to the breaking out of the war. Briefly, the plan would be to remove the metal from the centre of the street and place It on two cart ways, one on each side of the street. The centre would then be clear for laying down in grass and planting with small shrubs, and If & concrete base and iron rail could bo put In, similar to that placed on the Gaia street reserve, so much the belter. The measurement of the street would work out in this way—--2 footpaths 16 feet 2 Cartways 50 feet Centro, grass and shrubs.. 66 feet Total 132 feet Foot passenger asphalt crossings, say, 4 feet wide, would have to be provided at the middle of the blocks, as the distance to go round would be too great. Whether the scheme could be made to apply to the upper blocks where the tramway runs is a matter for expert opinion, hut I can see no objection to It, It might, however, be applied with very great advantage to the lower block, from Conon to Liddel streets. Details of the scheme will, no doubt, suggest themselves to the Council, if the matter is thoroughly looked Into. The present wind-swept trees which stand on the south side would he replaced hy cabbage trees, small shrubs, flax, etc., growing under conditions which would tend to promote their growth, as the best soil from both aides of the street would be placed in the centre. To properly grade and metal the entire width of Tweed street would probably run into thousands of pounds and then the street would still be an uninteresting one, whereas by adopting the suggested plan it would bo converted into a beauty spot, at a very moderate cost, and be still available for all the traffic there is likely to be on it for tlie next 100 years. I trust the scheme will receive the favourable consideration of the Council.—l am, etc., TWEED STREET. June S.
