( Own Correspondent,l The monthly meeting of the Malanra Borough Council was hold on Tuesday. I'rcsent. the Mayor (Mr ,(ohn Lowdcn). and Crs Ilcslin. I’arK. Sleeman, Thorn, West, (Jeering, Hrown. and Mitchell..— Mr John .McQueen, managing director of the Southland Freezing Co., waited upon the Council in regard to the operation of the proposed by-laws. It was decided that a conference consisting of the mayor, town clerk, Mr McQueen, and the borough solicitor he held at an early ilute. Messrs A, J. Thompson and 11. Walton formed a deputation from the .Mataora Brass Band, asking for a subside towards the band fund. It was decided to vote (S.-Mr HU! appeared in support of a petition to have an extension made of Hie main drain in Selbourne street. Iteferred to Drainage Committee to report as to cost. —-Mr Carver wrote asking that the reading room should he kept open till 0 p.m daily, and also on Wednesday afternoon. Mattel- held over. —Mr C, J. Anderson. M.L'.. wrote in reply lo a communication from the mayor re the official opening of new post office. It was resolved thill tills take place on Wednesday, April 11, if convenient to the Minister of Costs and Telegraphs, the member In 1,,, asked lo make arrangements.—Tim ('ommissioner of Crown Lands wrote giiiug reasons for prohibiting gravel being taken from Hie bed and hanks of the river. Deceived.- A largely signed pi-.ilioo was presented protesting against the above prohibition. -- The Bimanga Borough Council wrote enclosing a resolution calling upon the (lovermnent lo regulate the prices of foodstuffs. and it was decided to support it. The Town Clerk's report was adopted. H slated that the Southland County Council title for Waimnmn flood channel had been reduced by £.l; and that £it lOs 111 had been received from the Kdueation Hepartment as subsidy to library fund: that (lie mayor and himself bad arranged for the borough solicitor to proceed to Dunedin and interview the Health Officer in connection with the by-laws, and that the by-law relating to offensive trades had been referred hack for further consideration.It was resolved that contractors he held responsible lor the royalty on gravel obtained foe borough - purposes.—Th-. Drainage Committee report was amended to rend "that the committee examine tlie proposed drain from Alblan street to SleemaiTs corner, and report as to cost and method. —The mayor's honorarium was increased from £25 to £.lO,
