PRICE OF MILK
DISSATISFACTION* IN' WELLINGTON. INCREASED PRICES. (Per United Press Association.) ■WELLINGTON, March 23, The Wellington City retail milk vendors are up in arms against the proposal of the Fanners’ Association to increase llio price of milk to retailers. The Fanners’ Association comprises between .200 and 200 members, supplying something like 3000 gallons daily to the City. The Association fixes the prices of milk 12 months ahead, and in October last a circular was issued fixing the following prices;— October 1 to February 28. 6td per gallon; March 1 to April 30, 8d; May 1 to August 31 : 10d. In addition the purchaser has to pay a freight of over Id per gallon. Farmers now ask 10d per gallon for April, and in n recent circular members of the Farmers’ Association are advised to make no arrangements for the future as a further rise is anticipated. The Retailers’ Association objects to paying the increased price, and has Informed the Farmers’ Association that it intends to keep to the terms of the arrangement already made with suppliers to pay Sd per gallon and no more. There is. therefore, the prospect of a struggle between producers and retailers, with results inconvenient for the general public. The present retail price in the City ia fd a quart, or Is 4 d gallon, reduced to Is in case of large quanties.
