Received Alay 3, 5.5 p.m. Rosa Artu as been fined £2BO and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment ' at Sassari, and five fqmale accomplices to lesser terms of punishment. Evidence was given that cinematograph, previously unknown at St, Brl, was used in a dark cave for the purpose of swindling villagers out of hundreds of pounds for pretended apparitions of dead relatives. Others parted with their money to avert calamities by means of Rosa’s prayers. Amazing stories of witchcraft were told at the Sassari Assizes during the trial of several women for fraud last month. ‘The evidence showed the existence of a witch leagued professing mystic power in enabling it to locate hidden treasure and summon spirits of the dead, Rosa Artu, one of the prisoners, who is known as the “Saint of Sarrla,” refused a lawyer’s aid, saying that heaven was sending Saints Therese and Augustine to defend her.
