COUNTERFEIT NOTES
MORE ‘VICTIMS. NO TRACE OP CIRCULATOR. (Per United Association). AUCKLAND, April 16. Persons with counterfeit ten pound notes are still reporting their losses to the police, and the total number of notes traced to date is between one hundred and one hundred and twenty. The young dark foreigner who distributed the notes apparently confined his attention almost wholly to Karangahape road and Symonds street. Inquiries today show that at least twenty-two Symonds street shopkeepers were victims. Apart from these two shopping areas the thief visited Ellerslio racecourse, where notes, the exact number of which it is difficult to estimate, passed through the totalisator, and called on about twenty-five hotels, where in each case he purchased a flask of brandy and tended a ten pound note in payment. The fact that no counterfeit notes are known to have been given to shopkeepers since -Saturday indicates that the counterfeiter ha-? made the best use of his time since Saturday in covering up his tracks from the detectives, who are now giving a very great deal of time to the case.
