FIRES
MOTOR CAR DESTKOTTm,

HASTINGS, April 7. A sixty h.p. Napier motor car, ownetf by Graham and Gebbic., livery stablekeepers. caught fire on the road near Pakipakl last night through friction of the foot brake igniting the benzineOnly the driver was aboard. The cart was completely destroyed. It was insured for four hundred pounds. HOKONUI HOME DESTROYED. Tli e home of Mr Hector McDonald a* Hokonui was totally destroyed by fir® at y.30 on Monday morning. Mrs McDonald and five members of tbe family; were from home. being delayed th® previous evening by the downpour. Mr McDonald and one son was at home at the time, the later being engaged in, farm work. After putting the breakfast on, Mr McDonald went outside to feed tire horse. On returning he found tlie house in flames, and it was impossible to save anything. A Jrut close by was also destroyed. It is thought th® fire was caused through a defective chimney. There was an insurance on the house of £IOO and £SO on tlie furniture —botli in tbe National. There was nothing on the hut or personal belongings. Mr McDonald's loss is a heavy one. OATS DESTROYED. On Sunday morning Mr K. McLennan, of Wyndham. lost over 200 sacks of oats by fire. While he was away at the factory, his son went to set fire to straw refuse. The stubble caught, and the wind carried it in a flash to th© oat stack and also a straw stack. Mr McLennan thus lost all his winter straw and his season's oat yield, excepting what was saved of a pig feed value (150 sacks). The oats were a splendid sample’ of Carton—the best ever grown on the farm. There was no insurance, and th® loss will be £BO to £9o|
