The brigands looted the Treasury and made the crowd scramble for copper coins and notes, shooting anyone appearing to get more than a fair share. Over a thousand jieoplc were slaughtered, including a magistrate, who was hacked to pieces, and his remains soaked in kerosene and burnt. In an adjoining town where the people imprudently fired two old rusty cannons the whole population, including women, and children, were killed.
