WALLACE COUNTY RIDINGS.

To the Editor. Sir,—ln reading the report of Mr W. A. Rodgers’s speech at the special meeting of the Wallace County Council held on March 33th, I was rather amused to learn that in the space of a few hours Messrs Rodger and McGregor, assisted by the County Engineer, had valued all roads, bridges, etc., in the Wairio Riding. This statement has a ‘‘Yankee" flavour about it. and can be safely swallowed with a grain of salt. Now I would like to know what valuation ' these "flying valuators" placed on the Wref's Bush bridge. Some of the piles are rotten through. Less than twelve months ago the bridge gang put the bridge, as was stated at the time, in thorough repair. Mr Rodger in his scheme for adjusting the debt of Wairio riding failed to take into consideration the fact that our metalled roads about Wr?y’s Bush, in the first place cost little to make and are cheaply maintained with material from the Jacob river. The cost of material for making and keeping tip our roads ought to be compared with that of the Birch wood roads. I therefore consider in justice to the ratepayers of these pans that an average valuation of roads is utterly impossible.—l am, etc.. R.J.H. ‘ Wairio, 23rd March.
